Arun's Quiz - June 1998
Here are the Answers to the Quiz by Arun Simha.

1. This book has been steeped in controversy since it was banned in America after it's first publication. John Lennon's assassin, Mark Chapman, asked the former Beatle to sign a copy of the book earlier in the morning of the day that he murdered Lennon. Police found the book in his possession upon apprehending the psychologically disturbed Chapman. However, the book itself contains nothing that could be attributed with leading Chapman to act as he did - it could have been any book that he was reading the day he decided to kill John Lennon - and as a result of the fact that it was a book describing a nervous breakdown, media speculated widely about the possible connection. This gave the book even more notoriety. Which book?

AN APOLOGY REPUDIATED

We are to blame for giving "the Unreliable" an opportunity to misrepresent us, and therefore refrain from repining to any great extent at the result. We simply claim the right to deny the truth of every statement made by him in yesterday's paper, to annul all apologies he coined as coming from us, and to hold him up to public commiseration as a reptile endowed with no more intellect, no more cultivation, no more Christian principle than animates and adorns the sportive jackass rabbit of the Sierras. We have done.

ANS: Mark Twain.

6. His reaction to India's atomic blasts was this - " Sab ladka bol raha hain bum phut gaya. Police kyon nahin pakad raha hain?" ( All the boys said that a bomb had gone off. Why don't the police force catch them?) Who is this quintessential 'genius'?

7. Connect Dr. Manmohan Singh's maiden budget speech to a terrorist (freedom fighting?) episode during India's struggle for Independence.

ANS: The last statement in his budget speech was a couplet :

" Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamare dil mein hain,
dekhna hain zor kitna bazuen kaatil mein hain"

(We have the zeal of valour in our hearts. Let us see how much strength our rivals have!) This was composed by Ramprasad Bismil, one of the leaders of the Kakori conspiracy along with Chandrashekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh. They planned to hijack a train and steal money.
