NU SHOOZ Bio

The group Nu Shooz was formed in 1980 by guitarist and composer,John Smith, and vocalist and precussionist Valerie Day. The husband and wife duo released their first album on the Nebula Circle label in 1982. Their first release was called Can't Turn It Off. At the present time, very little is know about this first release.

In 1986 the group released their second album entitled Poolside. Poolside was released on Atlantic Records. Poolside proved to be the landmark release from the group with the hit single "I Can't Wait", written by John Smith, was familiarized with its use of a human voice sample. This song peaked on the Hot-100 Chart at #3 in June of 1986. The second single from this album "Point Of No Return" made the charts but, didn't do nearly as well as "I Can't Wait.

The group's third release Told U So had the release of one single entitled "Should I Say Yes". This album leaned away from the style of the Poolside album and had more of a jazz sound rather than R&B or Top-40. The single did not do well and shortly after Nu Shooz was not heard from.

In 1986 Nu Shooz recorded a song for the Soul Man Original Soundtrack.

Nu Shooz lost popularity after the release of Told U So but Valerie and John still continue to play in their hometown of Portland, Oregon.
