16 Saddles Up With Young Rider Buck- An Exclusive Interview (1990)
16: Hi, Gregg- do you like playing Buck on TYR?
Gregg: I’m really happy. He’s a character I can really get into- and I’ve always loved westerns!
16: Are you like Buck in real life?
Gregg: Definitely- there are similarities. I see Buck as a smart guy who never quite fit in. He’s also a bit reserved and insightful, kinda like me, or at least the way I try to be.
16: Buck is also part American Indian and part Caucasian- what about you?
Gregg: Similar background. He’s half Kiowa Indian and in real life, my grandfather is Cherokee/Osage. I’m proud of my heritage and I never felt like I had any trouble fitting in.
16: Where is TYR’s filmed?
Gregg: In and around old Tucson, Arizona. It’s really beautiful there- the sunsets over the desert are incredible.
16: What do you guys do in your spare time in Tucson?
Gregg: Well, we work six days a week, so there really isn’t a lot of spare time. But on Sundays, we all go out together- there’s a water slide, and a place to race miniature formula cares. Also, I like checking out bookstores, coffee houses, movie theaters, stuff like that.
16: Which Young Riders are you closest to?
Gregg: We’re all friends, but I guess Travis and I spend the most time together.
HOW HE GOT INTO SHOWBIZ
16: Where are you from?
Gregg: I was born in Flint, Michigan, and raised nearby in Sterling Heights.
16: Did you always want to be an actor?
Gregg: No, I always thought I’d be something like a veterinarian, because I love animals so much.
16: When did the acting bug bite?
Gregg: In junior high school really. I saw the movie Oliver and it suddenly hit me, boom!, watching that boy up on screen (actor Mark Lester) that I really wanted to do that. So I took an acting class at school and everything sort of snowballed from that.
16: Did you dream of being a star?
Gregg: I didn’t think I could. I loved being on stage, but I thought that to get into showbiz, you had to have an uncle in the business or something like that. I found out that you don’t.
16: So how did you make the jump from school plays into the biz?
Gregg: My acting teacher in school really believed in me- for graduation, she gave me a one-way ticket to Los Angeles! I went and bunked with the one person I knew there, and he helped me find an agent and some bit parts.
16: How’d you land the part of Buck?
Gregg: It’s a funny story. An actress friend of mine, Jamie Koss, just happened to be in the New York offices of ABC-TV and overheard a conversation some casting people were having about the role of Buck- Jamie jumped in and told them about me. I auditioned and got the role. It’s good to have friends in the right place at the right time!

Gregg: No, all my life, people have told me that they love my name!
16: Do you have any brothers or sisters?
Gregg: I’m the youngest of five- I have an older brother and three older sisters. They’re all in Detroit and they’re all musical.
16: Are you musical?
Gregg: Yes. Music has always been a big part of my life. I don’t play any instruments, but I do sing and would like to record at some point.
16: How tall are you and how much do you weigh?
Gregg: I’m 5’10 and weigh 145 lbs.
16: Hair and eye color?
