They arrived at Fort Laramie with no further delays. Sam had indeed beaten them there and was raising a search party to go after them.
"Sorry Sam. It's my fault." Buck told him.
"As long as you're all safe," he said hugging his wife again.
"Why Sam, we were never in any danger." Jimmy chimed in.
"Yea right. That's why there's a bullet hole in your shirt Jimmy.. I have a feeling I'd find bandages under there."
"Well not as many as Buck has around his shoulder."
"Let's go get some supper. And I expect the full story, not the edited version."
It was hard saying good bye the next morning. The two riders stood with Emma and Sam, reins in hand, trying to accomplish the task.
"We'll see you when the baby's born, right?" Jimmy asked.
"You'd better. Like I said, this baby's going to have a lot of godfathers." Emma answered, hugging Jimmy again. She turned to Buck, then looked at the sky where an eagle looped through the air. Buck's eyes followed hers and as they both watched the eagle flew off.
"I think he's saying good bye." Emma whispered as she embraced Buck one last time. He held her close, sharing one last moment.
"But he'll always be with me, in my heart," he replied quietly.
The two riders mounted their horses and with a final wave, began their ride eastward.
