Sam Cain, portrayed by Brett Cullen, is the Marshal of Sweetwater. Jimmy admires the way he handles himself and Emma Shannon admires him too, probably 'cos he's so darn handsome. Sam always tries to be fair and once had to arrest Jimmy and escort him to the gallows after he was framed for murder. He once advised Jimmy not to live life by the gun but said that if he was going to, then he should shoot to kill. The character of Sam really only had one episode dedicated entirely to him. In 'The Man Behind the Badge', we find out that Sam was once married and his wife was killed. Sam reacted by killing all but one of the men responsible. When this man turns up in Sweetwater, Sam gets into trouble. When he is replaced as Marshal, he turns to drinking, gets into a gunfight and is arrested. He is eventually cleared and gets his job back. Sam likes to work with the riders and they have helped him out on many occasions. His attraction to Emma is obvious and the two of them disappeared at the end of season one, never to be seen again. Though we did hear that Sam married and got a promotion.
