Chapter 10
You know its really getting to you
When you take to tellin’ lies
And you can try to fool your friends
But you can’t look ‘em in the eye
There ain’t no standin tall
In the shadow of the shame
When everybody knows
That you’re a victim of the game

The duo rode the elevator to the parking garage, completely unaware that they were being followed. JD had been aware of Lou’s agitation as she watched the security video and had been on his way to ask her if she was alright when he had witnessed the confrontation with Chief and knew that if he followed them he could find Casey, hopefully before she became a victim.

He ran down the stairs in the fire escape hoping that he was able to beat them to the basement. He crept out of the stairwell in time to see them driving up to the next level of the parking garage. Slipping quickly and quietly onto his bike he lifted his helmet onto his head and began to follow his friends. He trailed them at a discrete distance, not wanting to be found out but not wanting to lose them either. He actually contemplated calling Buck and letting him know where they were as he watched Lou and Chief get out of the car, but he didn’t want to waste anytime, so he left his bike and followed them on foot.

He stopped outside the four storey building they had walked into and drew his gun from its holster in the small of his back. Checking it was loaded and ready he slipped inside the door and checking in both directions as he entered he started the slow and stealthy trek up the staircase that had presented itself. He didn’t get far. Midway across the second storey landing he was hit from behind. JD’s legs crumpled beneath him like he was a rag doll. Sinking into the black darkness of the oblivion that beckoned him.

Buck and Lou systematically searched the rooms on each floor of the deserted building, becoming more and more discouraged with each room they finished, they were almost ready to move to the second floor when they heard a loud thud from what sounded like the staircase. Looking at each other, they each wondered if this could be where they stopped their months of misery and caught their prey. Chambering a round in their weapons they moved out onto the hallway and moved quickly and efficiently towards the staircase. Coming up empty when they reached the landing Buck knelt and ran his fingers across the threadbare carpet. Lifting them to show them to Lou. He mouthed one word “Blood” before the two of them began to climb the staircase gripping the wall as tightly as they could to provide a smaller target for the man who apparently wanted them to follow.

As they reached the top level of the staircase , they found an open plan penthouse like floor.

“Well nice of you to finally visit me Louise” a sinister deep voice spoke as they neared the top of the stairs.

Lou and Buck both looked towards the voice only to find Jeremiah holding a semi-conscious and bloodied JD in front of him.

“Please” Jeremiah motioned them “Come on in” he sneered “ The more the merrier”

At their continued silence and motionlessness he dragged JD even harder by the hair “Unless you want another death on your conscience” he lifted the gun that was still hanging loosely from JD’s fingers and gripped it with his hand around the young agents, pointed it at JD’s head.

“Move I said” he screamed at his sister and her companion. Watching them a maniacal smile crossed his face and he held JD’s arm out straight, taking aim with his gun and firing it. A gleeful chuckle bubbling from his chest as he watched a crimson stain spread across Buck’s chest as he slid down the wall.

Lou dropped her gun to the floor and threw herself at her brothers mercy, it was the only thing she could think of to keep her friends safe, or just alive would suit her at the moment.

“Miah, its me you hate please leave them alone” she begged him as she feel to her knees.

JD hung limply in Jeremiah’s grasp, the pain in his head causing him to drift in and out of consciousness. He watched horrified as the madman that held him had lifted his gun and shot Buck. Searching the foggy corners of his mind, he tired in the only way he could to get help for them before it was too late. He inched his fingers down his thigh until he could feel the phone that rested in his pocket. Feeling its shape with his fingertips, he pressed what he hoped was the send button, knowing that it was the number belonging to his partner that would be the one dialled. Satisfied that he had done all he could, he slipped into the murky black haze that yawned before him, falling into a pain free cloud that would hold him until his big brother saved him and their friends and proved the faith they held in each other.
