You have a choice of two modes of doing this exam...PICK ONE...worth 100 points.
1. Pick out five (5) concepts, ideas, insights from the materials we've covered (lectures, textbook---Chapters 1 and 2, and Online Readings) which YOU think best portrays "Sociology" thus far in the course. These should be major items.
You can do this in one of two ways:
1. List the items...providing an explanation of WHY they help you understand Sociology
or
2. Write an essay integrating these five ideas into it...but making sure to highlight them so they are distinquishable from each other.
OR
2. The definition of Sociology used in this course (see below) is a general or skeletal overview of the discipline and its subject matter...yet it also encompasses many specific concepts, ideas, and insights we covered in lectures, textbook---Chapters 1 & 2, and Online Readings. From these materials, select five(5) concepts, ideas, and insights to "add a little meat to these bones," so to speak. Continuing this metaphor, "flesh out" the definition a bit by referring to specific ideas which develop this "barebones" definition.
You can do this in one of two ways:
1. You can "rewrite" the definition by "adding" these concepts within it...i.e. give more detail to various points in it.
or
2. List, explain, and discuss each of the five separately...but referring back to the part of the definition which you are elaborating on.
Here's the Definition:
"Sociology is the study of the issues, concepts, investigations, and results of individuals living together. While Sociology's focus IS on groups, this focus should not exclude an emphasis on individuals. After all, individuals constitute groups and groups produce individuals. How can we study and fully understand one without the other? We can't...nor can we study them as if they were merely in competition with each other...that's too simple. Rather, as a study OF people, BY people...Sociology is a personal encounter with the Social Forces which shape our lives, especially those that affect our awareness (and ignorance) of how WE create, maintain, and change those very Social Forces."
