An Introduction to Deviance

by Erich Goode

Fair Use

The following is a classic piece of writing by Erich Goode. He introduces deviance as a concept...explaining its premises. He critiques the positivistic methodology he finds current, in that day (1978), which focuses on what he calls the "why" question. He feels Sociology needs much greater conceptual development as it relates to deviance and a better understanding of what the experience of deviance is like. In many ways...today...his critique is accurate.
