"Techniques of Neutralization" Interviews

INTERVIEW GUIDELINES ABOUT “TECHNIQUES OF NEUTRALIZATION”

1. Read coverage of this theory in BFS (p. 138)

2. Interview, verbally, 2 college students (one female and one male who are not in our class) concerning illegal activities they’ve engaged in (i.e. underage drinking, drug use/dealing...even minimal violence, vandalism, theft, cheating/plagiarism, etc.).

NOTE: You MUST pledge confidentiality and KEEP THAT PLEDGE!!

3. Ask them: WHAT, WHEN, HOW OFTEN, WITH WHOM, & WHY?

-Develop questions (non-judgmental ones!) to tap into these general issues
-Also: how important, if they indicated, was group membership in terms of participating in these activities?

4. As you listen AND record their responses:

-You should attempt to determine which of the “techniques” they are using to defend/explain/justify their conduct
-You should attempt to uncover which conventional norms are upheld by them

5. Your write up of the interviews

1. Introductory section describing your study (i.e. about what/when/why/how...including list of questions)
2. Separate sections detailing interview responses.. .including the questions you asked
3. Evaluation of each interview and your analysis (i.e. which techniques were used...any discernible difference between the male and the female respondents?)
4. Concluding Summary of your investigation
