Celebrating Genocide: A Poem

by David H. Kessel
Revised 11/26/03

It's Thanksgiving again...and all through the land,
A few are feeling terrifically grand.
They're pious and glowing about their bountiful bough,
Gathering round in a glorious glow.

But wait just a minute...have some respect,
About WHAT are we glowing...come on, reflect.
Yes, some sat and ate with the natives back then,
Then went on to slaughter...again and again.

So celebrate celebrate...up and away,
But TRY to remember just more than this day.
Don't avert those eyes, don't try to hide,
The truth of the matter? It was genocide.

Oh spoiler of fun...of ideals and all,
Can't you forget...why bring on our fall?
Why can't you just let us live and be?
And not remind us of our hypocrisy!

Forget we killed and killed some more?
Forget the people living in from the shore?
No...I won't forget...no, I won't abide,
I won't join in...celebrating genocide.

For that's what it was, there's not a doubt.
Or what would YOU call us driving them out?
The truth of the matter...in front of our nose,
Can't be hidden by a thankful pose.

So be with your family, your friends, and your kids,
Enjoy the food under all those lids.
But celebrate TRUTH, don't run and hide.
Witness to all...about the genocide
