Chapter Eight
Port Charles
General Hospital
There was a loud noise as the gurney burst into the otherwise quiet emergency room attended by two paramedics and a literally frantic Dr. Monica Quartermaine.
I need a trauma room stat, Monica yells her orders at the nearest nurse. Page Ramsey down from ob and call my husband and get him down here.
The paramedics guide the gurney holding the still unconscious Emily into the trauma room.
Lets hook her up to an EKG, I want oxygen, a complete chem 7 blood workup, and someone get me a damned fetal monitor for the baby. Monica continues. The paramedics work to obey her orders while Monica frantically maintains her hold on Emilys hand. She had just gotten her daughter back after twelve years of not knowing if Emily was alive or dead. She couldnt lose her again. And she wouldnt let her daughter lose the baby she was carrying.
Realizing that she was in the way of the paramedics and the intern working on Emily, Monica took a step back.
Dr. Tony Jones entered the trauma room and took one look to assess the situation. He was no longer a neurosurgeon, but had in the last decade become a very respected Emergency room physician as well as volunteering his free time at the clinic.
Status Report He called to the paramedic.
Female. 32. Ten weeks pregnant. Unconscious for about 30 minutes. Stopped breathing momentarily. No evidence of drug or alcohol abuse. No signs of responsiveness. Pupils fixed and dilated. Pulse thin but steady. Blood pressure elevated. Breathing shallow.
Tony nodded. Okay people, lets look alive. I want a complete battery of tests run to determine the cause of the unconsciousness. Call down and see if the MRI and Catscan labs are backed up. And then get me someone from obstetrics to do an ultra sound. I want to check on the status of the baby before we move any further.
Tony sees Monica standing to the side for the first time. Monica? He questions gently.
Monica looks at him with anguish in her eyes. Its Emily Tony, Monica whispers. Please do whatever you can to help her.
Tony looks at the pale young woman lying still on the trauma bed looking for signs of the teenager he once knew.
Where has she been all this time? He asks Monica.
Its a long story, Monica begins.
Drs. The nurse who is attaching the monitors to Emily calls their attention. Monica and Tony walk over to Emilys bedside. The nurse has removed Emilys shirt. There are pale red marks criss crossing Emilys back. There is no doubt what made them. Nothing else could have.
Monica pales. Even hearing Emilys story, it had not hit her what her daughter and grandson had gone through.
I will kill Helena Cassadine myself, Monica whispers through clenched teeth.
Tony doesnt even question what kind of connection Helena Cassadine would have with Emily Quartermaine. I think youd have to take a number and stand in line. He replies only half jokingly. Why dont you wait outside while we run these tests. Ill come out as soon as I know anything.
I paged Ramsey down here.
Good, Tony replied. Hell be able to tell us whats going on with the baby. I promise as soon as I know anything you will know.
Monica lets the nurse lead her to the waiting room.
A minute later Laura enters the waiting room.
How is she? Laura approaches Monica.
Still unconscious, Monica sits down heavily and leans forward. Tony Jones is in there with her now. They are running some tests. Monica pauses. Should we contact Lucky in Texas?
Laura hesitates. Not yet. Not till we know something. Let him focus on getting Jonathan back for now. Emily would want him there for their son.
Monica agrees.
There is a moment of silence.
I saw her scars, Monica lets out a ragged breath. The scars left behind by Helenas torture.
Oh Monica, Laura looks at her friend sympathetically. Shes a strong young woman. Shell make it through this too.
I could never understand why your family hated the Cassadines so much. But now I do.
El Paso, Texas
The Park
The sun is finally beginning to set and cast darkening shadows throughout the small park, but the two men sitting on the bench either dont notice or dont care.
I dont get it, Nikolas looks at his brother in open bewilderment. Why would my grandmother try to kidnap Emily or Emilys son?
Not try, Nikolas, Luckys voice is hard with bitter memories. She succeeded and damn near killed Emily and Jonathan. God, if I had known then what I know now, I would have shot her in the head instead of the stomach.
Lucky.... Nikolass voice is beginning to grow anxious. What are you talking about?
Lucky takes a deep breath. Now that the moment is here, he has no idea where to begin or even how to begin.
Do you remember after your father died? Lucky asks.
Nikolass eyes darken. Even after almost thirteen years, the pain from that loss haunts him. Stefan had died rescuing Lulu and Laura from a house fire. He had died heriocally. Nikolas had lost a father. The town of Port Charles had gained a hero. He would never consider it a fair exchange.
Afterwards, you were pretty much out of it... Luckys voice drops off.
If youre trying to tell me that I spent most of the time after my father died drunk, Im not going to argue with you. All I wanted to do was to forget. God, Id probably still be in some kind of alcoholic haze if Aunt Alexis hadnt taken me back to Greece and I hadnt met Kimberly. She saved me you know. In every way possible.
I know, Lucky whispered. But what you dont know...what none of us knew...is that Emily became pregnant that summer.
You and Emily? Nikolas looks shocked.
Lucky shook his head. No, you and Emily. He looked at his brother. I love Jonathan. In every way possible he is my son. Except one. Biologically. Jonathan is your son. Jonathan is a Cassadine. Thats why Helena has been so desperate to steal him. Thats why Emily left town when she realized she was pregnant. Thats why she went through hell to protect her son.
Nikolass world has just shifted and thrown him off balance. What are you talking about? I never slept with Emily. God she was just a kid I wouldnt have....
Maybe not sober, but drunk. Luckys voice is full of resentment. You should have heard her when she first told me. The pain. The self-hatred. Her first time. And you were so drunk you didnt even remember what you had done. Then, when she discovers that shes pregnant you bring home a fiancee and announce to the world that your intent to build a future with another woman.
Lucky...
Just do me a favor Nik and shut up, Lucky says. I know none of this is your fault. But you havent been the one who has spent six years trying to heal wounds you inflected. Let me finish. Emily realized she was pregnant. She wasnt the only one who realized she was pregnant. God knows how, but Helena found it. And she started her own little campaign of terror against Emily. Notes. Stalking her. Phone calls. Emily was scared. She had no one to turn to. Or she thought she had no one to turn to. Except my dad. He helped her leave town. He helped her go underground. Try to put yourself in Emilys shoes. Shes barely twenty. Pregnant. Unwed. Alone. With a madwoman trying to kill her. I dont know how she did it. How she kept her sanity. How she kept them both safe.
The truth is slowly beginning to sink in, but Nikolas is still reeling. She should have come to me. I would have protected her.
Like your father was able to protect himself?
What?
You dont think that fire was an accident? Helena meant to kill our mother and our sister and have your father watch. Except her plan backfired and Stefan was the only one who died. And he lived long enough to tell Luke what Helenas plan was.
And Luke told Emily..
Who did the only thing she could do....she ran. She lived on the run and on her own for six years. You have no conception of what that is like. The terror that haunts you. The moving in the middle of the night. The looking over your shoulder.
How did you find out? Nikolass voice is shaky and he finds himself trembling.
At Lilas funeral. Emily came home. She thought she was safe, but I spotted her. So did Helenas goons. They had her shot, Lucky closes is eyes with remembered pain. I can still feel her blood on my hands. She almost died. Jason found a doctor who saved her. I took her to California to recover. Thats when she told me the truth. Then Helena found us there. Emily offered herself if Helena let me live. Actually, Emily threatened to kill herself if Helena hurt me. Helena took her. I tracked down Jonathan. Then Luke, Jason, and I went after Emily. Helena tortured her. She sent assassins after Jonathan. He was six years old but he had to kill a man to save himself. He still has nightmares about it. Hell we all do. But we came out okay. And weve been a family ever since. And we will always be a family. The three of us. Now the four of us. Emilys pregnant.
You knew six years ago that I had a son? When you came to see me on Wyndemere and asked me for information you knew, didnt you? You knew that I had a son and that he was in danger and you didnt tell me? Nikolass voice is filled with accusations. What was this another Spencer game of deceit and lies.
Dont you get it yet! Lucky explodes. This is not a game. This isnt about your misplaced pride or your hurt feelings. This is about my son. My son and your daughter and the vicious bitch who is hunting them both.
Dont you mean my son? Nikolas taunts.
Jonathan will never be your son, Lucky eyes his brother warily. He knows about you, you know. Emily and I decided a few years ago that he had a right to know. Hes never asked a question about you. Or wanted to meet you. Or even mentioned your name. Hes a Spencer. Not genetically. But in every other way. And he will stay a Spencer if I have to take my wife and my children underground to keep him away from you and your damn family I will.
You bastard, Nikolas yells as he punches his brother in the cheek. You cant sit here and threaten to keep my son from me.
Listen to yourself Nik, Lucky rubs his chin. Nikolas can throw a better punch now than when they were teenagers. He isnt a possession or a trophy. Thats Cassadine thinking. Helena thinking to be specific. Hes a boy. He belongs with his family. The only family hes ever known. You want to be part of his life, I get that. You want to take over his life and you will have to fight me tooth and nail for a long long time. I will not allow anyone or anything to hurt my family again.
The two men exchange hostile glances for what seems like hours but in reality is only a few minutes.
Then Nikolas releases a deep ragged breath. This isnt over with you understand.
No, Lucky agrees in measured tones. But it is on hold until the children are back.
Nikolas nods his head in agreement and the two men walk slowly from the park which is now almost totally shrouded in darkness.
Port Charles
The docks
Michael turned the key of his car and killed the engine. He turned to his cousin. Explain to me again why we are here?
Ruby absently twirled a lock of blond hair. We are here to help your Aunt and my nephew your cousin.
The same cousin I didnt even know existed 24 hours ago.
The same one. He may be a new addition but hes still family.
Speaking of family, Michael began in his most reasonable tone, Shouldnt we be at the hospital with the rest of them waiting for word on Emilys condition?
Ruby shook his head. You really do lack the Spencer instincts dont you? This is the perfect time to check out the address Emily found on that Bomb woman. No one will miss us in the crowd at the hospital.
Bell, Michael corrected her. The name was Katherine Bell.
Bell Bomb who cares? Her last name could be Bedknob or Broomstick and I wouldnt care. The point is that this warehouse might give us a clue about where she is and maybe where Jonathan is.
So why arent we doing the smart thing and telling my Uncle Jason? He has men who make their living breaking into places like this.
Jason is in Texas. Unless you think his men will take orders from you there isnt enough time to alert the old folks.
I still think...
Are you sure that you have Spencer blood? I mean is it possible that your mother... Ruby stops. There are two topics that are taboo between the cousins. One is any mention of Michaels mother. The other she doesnt even want to think about. Im sorry.
Its okay, Michael says softly. Besides, Grandma Bobbie says I have Spencer blood. My father says I have too much of it. You want to know what is in that warehouse, well find out.
There is a determined glint in his eye as he opens the door to the car and climbs out.
Ruby smiles. Thats the Spencer blood.
And she follows her cousin as he makes his way around the warehouse.
Secrets Revealed:
Chapter Eight Part Two
In The Heat of The Night
Evening
El Paso, Texas
Maxie opened the door to her condominium out of sheer
force of will and once she had shut behind her, she collapsed to
the floor against the door.
She never in her entire life wanted to endure another day
like today. She had broken so many rules today. Almost too
many too count. Enough official rules to blow any hope she had
of making Chief Detective out of the water if they were
discovered. She had spent the afternoon talking strategy with
three civilians and a known criminal. She hadnt informed her
superiors of her suspicions or updated them on the status of the
investigation. She had taken advice, albeit reluctantly, from Luke
Spencer of all people on how to organize a surveillance. She had
agreed that Luke, Lucky, Nikolas, and Jason would all be there
at the zoo tomorrow. Not that she could have stopped them. At
least she would be there to clean up the mess they made. She had
also made arrangements to have uniform officers stake out
another half dozen spots just in case Jason was wrong about the
zoo. And she had spent a half hour trying to explain to Nikolas
Cassadine why offering a million dollar reward for the return of
his son and daughter alive was not a good idea.
All this to top a day that had started with the
investigation of a brutal and horrifying crime scene.
She was not going to sleep tonight. She wondered if
there was even a point in trying.
And to top it all off she had broken her number one
personal rule. She had thought about him. Not only thought
about him, but seen him , spoken to him, and actually touched
him- albeit accidentally and in passing.
What kind of an idiot are you Maxie Jones to still have
feelings for someone who obviously hasnt given you a second
thought in over three years? It took you months, okay almost a
year, to recover after that episode in New York. How many
nights did you sit by the phone hoping he would call? How many
times were you afraid to read the paper or watch the news in
case the violent life he led caught up with him? How many times
did you tell yourself that you were better off without him, that
youd find someone who could give you the kind of future you
really deserved?
How many seconds after seeing him again were all your
good intentions and defenses shattered? How in the world were
you going to be able to build them up again?
She got up off the floor wearily and went to fix herself a
cold cup of ice tea and to feed the cat. Evening McKenzie,
Maxie petted the cat and then opened up a can of cat food.
God, she thought to herself. Ice tea and feeding the cat. Exactly
how old are you Maxie- 27 or 72. Sorry, she told herself
ruefully, Im too tired to feel young tonight. Tonight I feel old,
old in mind and old in body. She stood and looked out at the city
below. Somewhere out there were too little kids in a lot of
danger. She hoped they were warm tonight and if they couldnt
be warm she hoped they were safe.
Twenty minutes later, Maxie had taken a hot shower and
put on a robe. Her hair was pulled back into a pony tail. She sat
down on the leather sofa and picked up a copy of Good
Housekeeping. The guys at the station would never let her hear
the end of it, but she much preferred GH to Men In Uniform or
Police Officer Quarterly. She lived that world, she didnt need to
read about it for entertainment purposes.
She was just about to fall asleep curled up on the couch,
when she heard the doorbell ring. Annoyed at the interruption,
she headed to the door. If this was Nikolas checking one more
time to make sure that she didnt need the Cassadine private
security force she was going to strange him, she thought to
herself as she opened the door.
Jason? Her heart stopped. His face was as usual
unreadable.
Can I come in? He asked politely. Too politely. His
distance made Maxie feel uncomfortable.
Never every instinct in Maxie screamed out. Her condo
was a Jason free zone. If she let him in, she would always have
the memory of him standing in her living room or in her kitchen
and even worse the fantasy of him in her bedroom.
She shook her head, willing her thoughts to go no
further. Im sorry. Its late and Im tired. Whatever it is, it can
wait. She congratulated herself on the steady voice.
We need to talk.
About your nephew. We did all the planning that we
needed to do this afternoon. If you have any questions, were
having a breakfast meeting before the final briefing. They can
wait until then.
We need to talk about us? Jason insisted.
Us? Maxie found herself laughing incredulously.
Theres been no us since you accused me of using my body
to get some kind of mafia secrets for my uncle and then gave me
ten minutes to get out of your life. Your words, not mine. I
dont recall you being anxious to talk at the time.
I was angry, Jason began but Maxie cut him off.
You were angry? YOU were angry?! How do you think
I felt? Did you once stop to think about my feelings? My God
Jason you accused me of selling my body. You were my first
lover. My first lover. And you humiliated me. You sent me
away. Well I did what you wanted. I got out of your life. I even
moved half a continent away to do it. And Im happy Jason
Morgan. I have a life that makes me happy. Im sorry that our
lives crossed again. Trust me if I had known accepting this case
would have brought you back into my life again I would have
called every OTHER detective I knew and begged and pleaded
for them to take this case.
Jason stares at her. He has never seen her angry before.
In New York, that Christmas they were together, he saw her
shy, laughing, happy, passionate, and devastated. Today he had
seen her cool, logical, professional. But never angry. Not until
now. He thought briefly of Robin and realized that he could
never remember or imagine Robin tearing into him like this.
Even when he had been in the wrong, even when she had
deserved to verbally beat him up, Robin had been calm, placid,
and forgiving.
What was he doing? Comparing Robin to Maxie? Or
Maxie to Robin? He had loved Robin? Maxie...Maxie had been a
one night stand. A night he couldnt seem to get out of his head,
but a one night stand none the less. He was only here to
apologize. To make things easier for the two of them to work
together. Here so that Maxie wasnt distracted from the search
for his nephew by any lingering feelings for him.
As he looked into her fiery green eyes, he realized how
incredibly lame all those reasons sounded even to him.
She was still beautiful. She still made his heart race. He
remembered how good it had been between the two of them.
The evening of laughter. The night and the morning and the
afternoon when they had made love so often and so incredibly
that all he had wanted was to stay with her.
It had been her lie that had made it possible and her lie
that had doomed it. He would never have touched her if she had
told him who she was. How was he suppose to know that Maxie
Jones would grow up looking like that? And when he had
discovered the truth, he did the only thing he could do.
He had made sure that she hated him. And he must have
done a good job because three years later it looked like she still
did.
So why was he here tonight? At her door?
He swallowed. I want to apologize. He finally finds his
voice wondering at 38 how it is possible to feel like a school
boy. Im sorry about New York. I didnt mean to hurt your
feelings.
She cuts him off. Dont lie. Dont you dare come here
and lie to me. Not tonight. Not ever. Of course you meant to
hurt me. You dont say the kinds of things you said to me and
not mean them to hurt Maxie wants nothing more than to have
this conversation over with before she breaks down. If you
want me to accept your apology, than fine I do. Ill even offer
one of my own. Im really sorry for lying to you. If it makes you
feel better, Ive paid for that lie a thousand times over. But not
anymore. I dont know why you are here. And to be frank, I
dont even care. Not anymore. Not about you. I can forgive you
Jason Morgan. But dont expect me to forget. Ever.
Maxie...I Jason is at a loss for words.
Dont you get it? Maxie unconsciously echoes
Luckys words to Jason earlier. I learned my lesson. Even a
child can learn this lesson. You put your hands to a flame and it
burns. You dont put your hands back into that flame. I dont
aim to get burned again, Maxie says evenly. Now if you will
excuse me, I have a long day tomorrow and some papers I need
to look over tonight.
Maxie shut the door, locked it, and stood shaking for a
minute. After a moment, she felt McKenzie purring at her feet.
She picked the cat up and held it .
I was right you know, she whispered to the cat. God,
help me I was right. No matter how hard I try, I cant forget. I
cant......
El Paso Texas
A Hotel
The first time Nikolas had become a father, the day
Stephanie was born, Nikoals had been up all night, unable to
sleep for fear of losing the tiny miracle that God and Kimberly
had granted him. Now he had become a father again.
And he still couldnt sleep.
Jonathan. Jonathan Cassadine. He shook his head. Not
Cassadine. Jonathan Spencer. Jon Spencer. Johnny Spencer. He
looked at the photo in his hand. Not really a photo, but a copy of
the picture that Maxie had distributed to her men so that they
would no who to look for. He had been staring at it for the last
hour.
He still couldnt find any resemblance to himself. The boy
was all Emily. Emilys eyes. Emilys sable hair. Emilys facial
structure.
God, what had he done to someone he had once
considered a close friend. He had
gotten her pregnant. Left her to raise a child alone. In danger.
What would he have done if she had come to him that
summer? Insisted on marrying her. Helped her to raise the child.
Maybe he would have even fallen in love with her. Not the way
he loved Kim. But a kind of love. And he would have had his
son safe and sound at home with him where he belonged.
And Stephanie would not have ever existed. He would
never have known a love that made his life whole and peaceful.
Fate. Growing up in Greece he had been reared almost
believing in the three old hags and their scissors and loom. He
had seen for himself the intricacies of this thing we call life.
Stefan had saved his the woman he loved and the child he
adored. Paying the ultimate cost to keep Laura safe. And alive.
So she could reunite with his bitter rival and live out the rest of
her life Luke Spencer. Luke had saved Emily s life twice and
was now doing everything in his power to find Jonathan.
Stefans grandchild.
Fate. Nikolas had grown up believing that his father was
his uncle. His son had grown up knowing that his uncle was his
father. Nikolas had loved the man that he called uncle and that
love had increased when he learned to call him father. Jonathan
loved the man that he called Dad and would never learn to call
him Uncle.
Fate. Nikolas had done nothing wrong. He was not
responsible for what his grandmother had done to destroy the
people he cared about. But he was always paying the price. He
had lost his mother to Helenas manipulations. Then his father.
Now he had lost his son.
Fate. Nikolas looked up at the ceiling and fancied that he
could see the three hags busily spinning yet another intricate
pattern. I can handle whatever you decide to throw my way, he
found himself whispering to them, no matter how complicated
and screwed up things get. Ill deal. Just keep them safe and out
of harm. Nothing else matters. Nothing.
Port Charles
The docks
Michael once again cursed the stubborn pride that had
made him enter the warehouse when all he wanted was to get
out of there and get out of there quick. He would never tell
Ruby this, but the place was beginning to freak him out. There
were large boxes and crates all over the place, with foreign
markings that he barely recognized from his high school Russian
that AJ had forced him to take. The warehouse was also dark
and cold and not, in his mind at least, where he wanted to be
tonight.
I dont see anything, he turned to Ruby. This is just a
warehouse. Exactly what it looks like.
Ruby shook her head. We havent check it all out yet.
What are you expecting to find- bodies stuffed into the
closet?
Warehouses dont have closets, Ruby looked up at him
in exasperation, than her blue eyes saw something. But they do
have offices. Come on.
You know that we are going to set off a security alarm
any minute?
No way, Ruby replied as they reached the office door.
We walked around the outside for almost an hour with no sign
of guards or even of life out here. Besides, youre a
Quartermaine what are they going to do? Youre family owns
half the town. Or at least the better half and the half your uncle
doesnt control.
Michael glared at his cousin. Make up your mind...either
Im a Quartermaine or Im a Spencer. But this bouncing back
and forth is giving me a headache.
You are whatever I want you to be, Ruby exclaimed
loftily. Now lets go.
She pushed open the office door and Michael sighed. It
looked like a typical office to Michael. Just like the one his father
had at ELQ.
Whats this? Ruby points to an invoice. Look at this-
half of these things are being shipped to Cassadine Industries in
Greece.
So this warehouse belongs to your brother? Does this mean
the police will only lock us up for ten years instead of twenty.
No, listen, Ruby ignores the barb. Nikolas turned the
running of the company over to Alexis years ago. Alexis sold all
the holdings in Greece except for the island. Shes also
discontinued doing any kind of business in Greece since most of
the Greek Cassadines sided with Helena in that nasty war they
had. Cassadine Industries does most of its
business in Western Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Then why are these things going to Greece.
Ruby shook her head. Your guess is as good as mine.
She flips on the computer
at the desk and ejects a disk.
What are you doing?
We need answers. I think there might be answers on
this. She holds up an old fashioned disk.
Do you think think Lucky or someone can tell you
whats on that disk?
Forget Lucky. Ruby smiles. You and I are going to
solve this mystery on our own.
I hate it when you smile like Uncle Luke. Michael
groans.
El Paso, Texas
Katherine is checking in. She has checked in with Helena
on almost an hourly basis since the boy eluded them at the
Stewart house.
Any sign of them? Helenas voice is strong but the
image on the vid phone is old and weak. Katherine grins. She
can almost feel the reigns of power in her hands. All she has to
do is give Jonathan to Helena and all of Helenas business empire
will be Katherines.
No. The boy has simply disappeared. We have word
that Nikolas has arrived in town and has joined Lucky, Luke, and
Jason in the search for the two children.
You will not harm Nikolas.
The favored one? Not a chance. Katherine lies. If she
has her way, not one of them will return to Port Charles. Right
now I figure that Lucky is the best lead to finding your great
grandson that I have. Sooner or later the boy will make contact
or they will find him. We have spies at the station. We will find
the boy. When we do, what do you wish us to do about the
girl?
Kill her. The last thing I need is a Cassadine girl child
running around. Not considering how badly the last one turned
out. I still regret the day I allowed Alexis to live.
Got it. Katherine confirmed. Kill the girl, take the
boy. No problem.
It better not be. Not if you want what is coming to
you.
I told you I could handle this.
And make sure you check with Miller and Fairfax in
Port Charles. I want nothing to go wrong with this last
shipment.
Katherine nodded as she hung up. A few minutes later,
her cell phone rang.
This is Bell. Im listening. Yeah. You got proof?
Tomorrow. Where? The zoo Okay, tell the men Ill be there.
Katherine grinned as a look of pure evil crossed her face.
