Extracted From The New Paper J-POP group SPEED will be speeding up the charts no more. The four-member girl group are going their separate ways from March next year. The news may come as a surprise to fans since the group just burst on the music scene three years ago. The reason for the split? SPEED management said the break-up was triggered by some members' plans to go back to school. Lead singer Hiroko Shimabukuro plans to return to her studies while Hitoe Arakaki is keen to learn dancing and English in New York. Or could it be that they're just keen on solo careers? Hiroko, the youngest member of the group, already has a successful single, As Time Goes By. Two other members, Takako Uehara and Hitoe Arakaki, released chart-topping singles earlier this year. The fourth member, Eriko Imai, will be releasing a solo single this month. So it looks like SPEED fans will still be seeing their idols around. At a press conference in Tokyo on Tuesday, the group's management said: "SPEED's scheduled activities wll proceed as planned until their official split on March 31 next year." "Hiro will go back to finish her secondary school and continue on to university. Hitoe, who has already done some acting in a drama series, will probably go to New York to study and train in dancing." The four teenagers, whose average age is 16, have a following in Singapore. The group's best-of-album, Moment, has sold more than 15,000 copies, making it the first Japanese pop group to hit platinum here. SPEED will release their latest single, Long Way Home, in November and are now recording their fourth and final album, due out in December. To bid farewell, they will perform concerts in Japan. "I know that all our fans are shocked by our decision," said Takako at the press conference. Added Hiroko: "Thank you to all our fans for the care and support. We hope you will understand our reasons for splitting up," And what do fans say? Said Alfred Tay, 17, a student: "I was quite shocked when I first heard the news over the Internet. But it's a wise decision to disband while the group is doing so well so they are able to leave a deeper impression on people's minds." Said Tan Kiang Yeow, another 17-year-old student: "I always thought they would split up but not so suddenly." Sighed Irene Koh, 21, a sales assistant: "It's a pity because their music is quite unique and they are all so young. They could've had a long career ahread of them."

SPEED will break up in March, 2000!!! Only three years have past since their sensational CD debut. Their agency has decided to make their emotions and feelings top priority as they release this shocking news to their fans. They will continue to keep their solo activities. The agency issued the statement that the girls are still just teenagers and would like more time and privacy, like normal girls. The Four Domes Tour at the end of this year will be their last live performance.
After announcing that Speed will break up, gossip magazines and websites are beginning to talk about each girl. The four girls made the decision to break up together. Taka-chan said "Four of us have been together till now, but I just want to have a little bit more time for myself". Hiro-chan said "I want more time to think about the future and I want to study". Hitoe-chan said "Everyone has their own dream, being in a group makes it difficult". Eriko-chan said "I'm sorry for all the fans. I hope they understand. The breakup has nothing do do with our relationship with each other."
Their agent said the breaking up discussions began back in August. The girls decided that it was too hectic being an idol group and individual activities were not being fufilled. It was to difficult to have a normal girls life. So they decided to break up. After breaking up they will take a few weeks to a few months to rest before starting their solo careers.
Taka-chan is leaning towards becoming an actress. Eriko-chan will continue with a singing career. Hitoe-chan wants to go to the United States to study. Hiro-chan is still unsure as to what she wants to do. Eriko-chan said "Breaking up for us is like starting our new lives. Even though we break up I hope each of you fans always remember Speed inside your hearts.
They will continue with a full schedule for the remaining year. On November 3rd they will release a new song called "Long Way Home" November 20th will be the start of their second Four Domes Tour. New Year's eve will be at the Kohaku Utagasen at NHK (Red and White) and then the Nihon Record Taisho (Japan Record Awards).
For the first few months of 2000 they will release one more album and their last single. People are guessing that they will have a massive final concert at Tokyo Dome or some large area outside on March 31st, 2000.
In the meantime there is lots of news about Speed. Hiroko, the youngest member at 15, has revealed her relationship with former Johnny's Jr./Talent Naoki Takahashi (16). Hiro-chan said her boyfriend is one of the few friends that she can trust. There is a rumor that because of this relationship there was trouble between Hiro-chan and her Agency. Her agent said I think it's good that they have an open relationship. They are only young once.
Taka-chan also commented on her relationship with Da Pump's Issa. Taka-chan said we (Speed and Da Pump) are all in the same agency so we are all close and confide in each other. Taka-chan claims that Issa is a "good boyfriend".
SPEED Arena has received over 1 million hits over the last 3 days, asking them not to disband SPEED. The record company also received over 10000 phone calls, Radio Company which hosted their radio show also receive over 800 faxes and over 3000 emails.
