According to Hebrew mythology, Lilith was Adam's first wife. She was replaced by Eve, when she would not obey Adam. She is said to have then been forced to marry Satan in some stories. Other stories say she retreated to a cave on the shores of the Red Sea. She represents the refusal to participate in an oppressive system and the power to reject patriarchal superiority.
It is not very shocking that Lilith was made into a demon, a dark Goddess, since she did not obey Man. But this is one of those situations where what is called dark and evil by men, is actually liberating and powerful for women...and men who value freedom and equality.
Nancy Blair's book, Goddesses for Every Season, suggests the following affirmation for Lilith:
"I refuse to let the opinions of others determine my state of mind.
"I am in charge of my thoughts and emotions.
"I stop worrying.
"I choose happiness first.
"I open to the pleasures of life."
