I remember hearing about the attack that Fred died in before I found out he had died. It was near the beginning of the offensive campaign in Iraq in 2003. A marine unit had been attacked by a group of Iraqis who had pretended they were surrendering. I was in the middle of moving my family from Corvallis, OR to Charleston, SC, where I was going to attend Navy Nuclear Power School. It was several days later, in a hotel somewhere between Texas and South Carolina, when I learned on CNN that Fred had been killed. At that time, CNN was posting pictures of all the soldiers killed in Iraq over the last few days, and I saw Fred's picture before I saw his name. My wife and I were stunned.

In the time since Fred's death, I have seen many news clips and reports with Fred's wife, Chelle. She has been very active with organizations helping other military widows. I have been very impressed with her actions. I think she has done Fred proud.
