Cigar Store Tokens and Other Oddities
Have found a surprisingly large number of cigar store tokens. Guess smoking was more politically correct in the old days. The Geiser Grand is an old hotel that has been recently refurbished. If you are ever out this way, you need to drop in and take a look at what they have done to the old wreck.
Although another hotel, The Antlers is in need of rennovation. This is a 62 1/2 c piece that must have been good for 5 cigars. Just think what Bill and Monica could have done with this! On second thought, I need to erase that image from my mind.
Speaking of dirty thoughts, check out this "For one *&@* on the Horseshoe. Technically qualifies as a fantasy piece. But what a fantasy piece, from the Portland World's Fair (Lewis and Clark Exposition) of 1905. Now if I knew for certain that there was a house of ill repute known as the Horseshoe operating in 1905, this would be a true whorehouse token. A reasonable possibility, as I have another 1905 Portland World's Fair token that is good for 50 c at a Crawfordsville Oregon bar. Enterprising businessmen might have cut some advertising pieces at the fair that were meant for circulation.
