Lyons House (circa 1907)

Lyons House
421 SE Washington Street

Edward J. Lyons purchased this lot in 1889 and retained ownership until 1907 when it was sold to William Nelson (who ran a hardware store on Washington Street from 1903 until around 1917). The house was built sometime between 1902 and 1912. Architecturally, this building exhibits a transitional Queen Anne style. The design incorporates some subtle Stick style details and there is also Craftsman style influence. It's possible that construction was commissioned by Nelson. However, Lyons is commonly considered to be the home's original owner.

In the late 1880s, E. J. Lyons operated the popular Farmers Exchange Saloon which was located on the south side of Main Street between Second and Third Avenues. He also had an ownership interest in the Lyons and Hare Feed and Sale Stable (later renamed the Hillsboro Livery Stable) until 1903.
