Pittenger House 337 NE Second Avenue |
Originally from Indiana, Mary Melvina Pittenger (née Eagleton) came west with her parents and settled in Hillsboro in 1860. She pursued a long career as a school teacher and married William Dwight Pittenger in 1868. William was a dry goods merchant and served a term as mayor of Hillsboro.
This large Craftsman Foursquare style home was built for Mary Pittenger around 1909 but she was the occupant for only a short time. In 1911, Mary (then 65 years old) moved in with William Eagleton Pittenger, her son who was a local dentist. This residence was then sold to James Bettis for $3,000. Bettis was an ice machine man at the Hillsboro Mercantile Company.
