Shattuck House (circa 1893?)

Shattuck House
343 NE Jackson Street

Because home construction in this vernacular style was common over a long period of time and also because telltale architectural details have been removed, this structure is difficult to date. Records indicate that Hugh Miller purchased this lot from the developer of Finney's Addition in 1890 for $250. The Hillsboro Cultural Resource Inventory asserts that the building may date to around 1893. However, the Inventory also states that, because the massing, plan and façade arrangement of the structure is more typical of the 1870s or earlier, the house may predate Miller's ownership.

In 1893 the property was mortgaged to Erasmus D. Shattuck, who was a prominent district attorney and judge in Portland. Through foreclosure, Shattuck took possession of the house in 1899. Shattuck's oldest daughter, Ira, sold the residence to O. G. Wilkes in 1903.
