Wilfert House (built circa 1890)

Wilfert House
868 SE Washington Street

This house was moved to this lot and its original location is unknown. Therefore, its history has been difficult to uncover. A good example of the Queen Anne architectural style executed on a small scale, this residence is thought to have been built around 1890.

Queen Anne elements include an irregular plan, differing roof and window shapes and a variety of siding materials. This house features a truncated hip roof and two gables (clad with wooden fish scale shingles) projecting from the main structure. Characteristic “gingerbread” decoration can be seen in the scroll sawn brackets above the façade's bay window and also on the porch where turned posts and a spool-and-spindle course are exhibited. The windows on the front and west elevations all boast an upper sash comprised of one large central pane surrounded by smaller colored panes.
