This is a short excerpt from SOCIOLOGY, Second Edition, by Alexander Liazos. He explains the fundamental/domain assumption upon which Sociology rests...that there are PATTERNS to social life...these patterns on the Macro level are what sociologists call "Social Structure." It is an excellent short statement of an issue many students have a difficult time grasping.
An excellent followup to this is Eitzen and Baca Zinn's Assumptions of the Sociological Perspective. The three assumptions they delineate all follow from the domain assumption which Liazos states so well.
