"Reduce class size, upgrade buildings, and
improve neighborhood schools—the
levy will help us achieve these goals."
Dr. Elizabeth Gordon, Superintendent of Schools
The first Tuesday in November, voters in the Franklin School District will be asked to approve a 5-mill levy critical for planned improvements throughout the District.
The School Board plans to use the money collected through this levy to reduce class size in grades K through 3. Classes in these grades are currently overcrowded throughout the District.
Also in dire need of repair funds are some of the District's oldest schools, Merit Middle and Heller Elementary. Last winter's severe weather caused water pipes to burst in both schools, resulting in serious plaster and flooring damage. Other schools in the District also badly need cosmetics such as new paint and window replacements.
The last operating levy, approved five years ago, was projected to last only four years. Even with stringent budget cuts, the District cannot keep pace with inflation.
If passed, the levy monies would be allocated as follows:
K - 3 class-size reduction | 2 mills |
Building maintenance | 1 mill |
Inflationary costs | 2 mills |
Total millage | 5 mills |
Franklin School District deserves a chance to continue the improvements it has accomplished in the past five years. Support your schools by volunteering your time and casting your vote for the levy in November.
