Treat ALL children
with equal respect

Your job is to help all children develop their skills,
not just the ones who are already obviously the talented athletes.
Some children could become better athletes if they had the opportunity for more skill development, and/or time to mature physically and emotionally.

Never give in

A coach must continue to teach, even when some of the players look like they aren't 'getting it.'

Teach right up to the last out of the last game of the season.

Spend extra time, after practice, with those players who need it the most.

It is important that you make your players understand the fact that the techniques you are teaching them may involve failure.

If a player is having a measure of success and performing a certain skill incorrectly, he must understand that when you change him he will fail until the new skill becomes part of his 'muscle memory'. The player will fail at first so you should be there to help him grasp that fact.

'How a player deals with that adversity determines his future.'

In becoming a coach, you take on the role of educator. You must teach your players the fundamental skills and strategies necessary for success in their sport.
Veteran coaches in your league are an especially good source of help for you.
They have all experienced the same emotions and concerns you are facing, and their advice can be invaluable as you work through your first season.

Keep the reasons for the game in perspective

Winning is not everything
Your job is to help each child play his or her best.
You may feel great pressure from parents, more accomplished athletes on your team, organizations, and sponsors and within yourself to win, win, win.

Keep in mind girls and boys want to do well,
 they want to win,
but most of all they want to have fun
 and they
ALL
want to be able to play.
