Belonging

Butterflies - Bracelet 2007

To belong is a necessary aspect of life. The material culture of belonging is evident around us everyday. Engagement, wedding and friendship rings indicate belonging to another individual in some specific way. Class rings, team rings and other ‘group’ rings signify belonging to the membership of a particular group within the community. Religious iconography signifies belonging to a particular religious community (or philosophy) within the context of the wider community. Badges, uniforms and supporters’ gear are all indicators of belonging to discrete groups. A small town can provide that feeling of belonging while, in a large city, it might take a while for a sense of belonging to replace the inherent anonymity of the newcomer. Such ‘belonging’ creates an environment of comfort and security. Within such an environment, one feels safe to exhibit individuality. Individuality often manifests in personal adornment, including jewellery.

In producing work for this exhibition, I have strived to combine the concept of personal adornment and the colours that belong to the region in which I live. My jewellery endeavours to reflect the colour of sky, sea and rainforest. However, it also is influenced by the vivid colours of the likes of flowering poincianas, bougainvilleas and jacarandas etc., as well as the more muted colours of west of the range.
