Prelude To Gilgamesh

A note or two on the helmets of the gods.

In hot climates the horns of many wild animals are long and imposing to radiate heat. This is recognized a symbol of power, and so all gods have horns on their helmets. The gods themselves do not have horns coming out of their heads.

The helmets in this comic are all different. They all have three sets of horns on them, but they are arranged and colored differently. In actual Sumerian / Akkadian / Babylonian iconography you will find all of the images of gods of a particular period have the same horn style. Older images have the horns facing outwards, later ones have them all curling inwards. I made the helmets distinctive so that it would be easier to differentiate characters.

The helmets do not follow the curve of the head. This is a method to deflect blows away from the skull. I have heard people say that Sumerian gods are super smart aliens and this means that they should have large egg shaped heads. That’s just silly.
