MOSMAN LIBRARY – AUTHOR VISIT

LAUREN CHILD

8 October at 10.30 Mosman Library was cram packed with “Die Hard” Lauren Child Fans!

Lauren started the day off with a talk and slide show presentation about some of the books she has written since 1991.

The first book she wrote and illustrated Clarice Bean That’s me.

Lauren explained that she has always liked Children’s books etc, and wanted to do a cartoon but friends suggested she try writing children’s books and that is what she has done – with great success.

Lauren also went into detail about her illustrating style which is Collage, she finds fabrics, papers etc for backgrounds for her pages, uses photographs of images, draws her characters and other bits and pieces for each page and layers all this onto the back ground piece by piece and there you have it a completed picture, with the text carefully placed to give added impact to the story created.

Also she explained how she got some of the idea’s for her stories, it was very entertaining.

Lauren mainly spoke about Clarice Bean (pronounced Clariss in her wonderful English accent), Lola and Charlie and a small amount about That Pesky Rat.  I would have loved to hear about “Herb” from such stories as Beware of the Story Book Wolves and who’s afraid of the big bad wolf, he is one of my favourites too.

Look out for a further Clarice Novel as she is working on that at the moment.

Check out the Clarice Bean website www.claricebean.com

Laurens Latest book I am Absolutely Too Small For School, was released in September 2003 and is available from HEA for $25.16

Photo's from the day available shortly (if they turn out)..

Term 1 Holidays we were lucky enough to see a production of Morris Gleitzman’s book Worry Warts performed at the IPAC (Illawarra Performing Arts Centre) by a production company – Monkey Baa Productions.  And this term (3) was another stellar performance.  Term 3’s holiday entertainment at the IPAC was an event for the Merrigong Theatre Co. in conjunction with the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre of

Tim Winton’s book The Deep.

  Scene from the play

The story is about a young girl called Alice who has a fear of the ocean that she conquers through a swim with a friendly dolphin. Sharing her adventure is her mum and dad, brothers, also a cast of puppet sea creatures of which are a beautiful fish, an octopus, a funny crab, and Alice's pet pooch Ruffy the Dog.

The performance was captivating, the use of puppetry and minimal props encouraged imagination, the story was great and I am sure everyone young or old can identify with the main character as we all have our own fears.  I thoroughly enjoyed it as I have said before it is great seeing a book come to life, live theatre is a great way for this to happen more so than movies because some of the imagination is still left up to the viewer.
