Fun With Filo
Mood:  hungry
Now Playing: BBC Radio 4
Topic: Elisabeth's Entries
Stephen has been having fun with Filo the past 24 hours. Last night he made spinach & feta filo parcels, and tonight he's making a Green Kulbyaka, which is basically a Russian casserole using rice, lentils, onions, mushrooms all baked in filo pastry. MMMMMmmmm lots of butter & smells so good!

For dessrt I will attempt to make chocolate filo truffles. But I've discovered, or perhaps the better word is admitted, that Stephen is the better cook between the two of us, which is fine with me. In genereal I'm a rubbish housekeeper...I did the laundry today and remembered only half way through the cycle to add soap. : [

Now, onto more important things: The Whisky Marmalade contest:

Since our blog host erased some of ourcomments for the contest for answereing the question "why is Stephen calling our Bonzai plant Buckaroo?" we have decided to forfeit that competetion. The answer lies in a fabulour movie (screened in 1984) called Buckaroo Banzai. Check it out. You will NOT be disappointed!

SO THE NEW CONTEST::

Please submit your favorite filo pastry receipe, and the best tasting dish will be judged the winner of one jar of whisky marmalade, which will be posted to your mailing address free of charge.

We look forward to receiving your receipes!!!!!

I don't have a recipe for it, but have you ever had cranberry-brie phyllo packets? They're lovely. Here's my idea, though: use goat cheese instead of brie, and thicken up the cranberry with sugar and honey and cornstarch, and then stuff the phyllo with hunks of cranberry and schmears of goat cheese, wrap them up, cook em, and then when they're done, pour the sauce (coulis) from the cranberries on top and adorn with mint! I've never made this, but I bet it's good. I just made it up.

Runs off to buy phyllo.

I think someone REALLY wants that jar of Marmalade...

Sounds delish though...but is it filo or phyllo?

It's filo. ... But I think what Jenn should be doing is roasting goat's cheese with pine nuts on top and then serve it up with a side of cranberry sauce! No filo, I know but yum!

When you were visiting, did you ever have the deep fried brie at one of the pubs E&I frequented in Englefield Green? They deep fried the brie and stuck it in a cooked tortilla with lots of cranberry sauce and it was fan-freakin'-tastic!

Yo yo. I just looked it up, and they're both right. Phyllo would be closer to the original Greek spelling, since there ain't no F in Greek, and Phyllo looks like a fantastically Greek word.

Leave it to the Brits, though, to pretend like the latin version is the right one. Psh.

Hmmm... I'll keep refering to it as "filo." Me? Spell something by its CONTINENTAL spelling? I'm in Britain, by Jove!

Oops, isn't Jove Greek too???

Drat!

By the way, Jove is also Latin. You're such an effing Latinophile. Jove is what the Latins called Zeus.

So have it your way, Jove & Filo. I'll stick with the originals, Zeus & Phyllo.

Mmmm.

WHERE'S DAT MARMALADE AT?
