Wales Road Trip
Mood:  happy
Topic: Elisabeth's Entries
Yes, I will blog today. Although my neck & shoulders are still tense and my hands are sore from gripping the steering wheel so hard.

What our trip boils down to was an uneventful drive through southern and mid-Wales as well as a bit of the Cotswolds. We couldn't see more because I became too stressed out/fried/ exhausted from driving so much, so intensely after such a long period of time not driving at all (5 years!). The most I had driven in a lesson was 2 hours...but that was just jolly country roads or villages/towns. Much of the driving on this road trip was on narrow, winding country roads where the speed limit was 60mph, and most of the turns only allowed for a 40mph velocity. So it required a lot of concentration, which eventually burned me out.

I used to drive long distances between Virginia and Toronto/Montreal, but there was little chance of getting lost, and little confusion over which way to go. This is not true of my experience driving in England, and I'm afraid it doesn't come naturally to me to just go with the flow of whatever happens. Instead I worry and get tense. Bad to be that way, but good to know about myself!

All this to say, we didn't bicker with each other...very much. Instead I just took lots of scenic breaks (see pictures below) and rest stops for mochas and crisps.

With that preamble, we left Woking on Fri. morning around 10:30 and made it to Swansea by around 18:00. We couldn't have asked for better weather: sunny, fairly cloudless, cool breeze...and it stayed this way all weekend! In between, we drove to Tintern Abbey (beautiful location, but we couldn't stop...no parking...too many people!), drove to White Castle (Y Castell Gwyn) which was in the middle of nowhere up the smallest one-lane farming road I'd ever been on. We then drove through some beautiful mountains to Swansea where we found a Tesco parking lot to leave the car while we looked for a B&B. However, it was Easter Bank Holiday weekend, and of course...no vacancies. The guide book recommended Mumbles, a small village just down the coast, as a charming place to visit. So we took off & became embroiled in bank holiday madness! This little one-street village was overrun like ants on melted ice cream. It took a lot of driving back & forth to finally find a parking spot...only to find there were no vacancies in town. By this time the sun was setting and my nerves were very shot!

We decided to try the Marriott at Swansea or else head towards Cardiff. We should always be able to find something there!

No vacancies at the Marriott---goodbye Swansea...you looked interesting, but not to be. Finally I saw a rest-stop with a "bed" icon indicating a roadside hotel...and viola the blessed Days Inn came to our rescue just outside of Bridgend. This being Stephen's birthday-we had had no lunch or dinner...just snacks in the car. So I convinced Stephen there would be at least a sandwich or even a slice of pizza at the rest stop. All that awaited the hopeful was a cold cheese and onion pasty. Which we ate on the hotel bed watching The Bodyguard. Not exactly what we had in mind!

Saturday morning, I felt refreshed (as could be) and after a coffee and Cinnamon swirl at the rest-stop, we headed north to see how far we could go. We got as far as Dolgellau, which is just inside the Snowdonia National Park. We ate lunch at a lovely pub (I had a fish & chips---my vegetarianism has been broken only to include fish when deemed important enough). Then at 14:30 we had a choice to push on north to two places we had wanted to see: Harlech castle (supposedly the most perfect example of a castle in Briton) and Portmeirion, an eclectic town filled with imported buildings of all styles. Basically, an architect running wild on the coast of Wales. Both of these were also listed in Rough Guide's "35 Things Not to Miss" in Britain. However, Stephen pointed out, correctly, that in three hours, when we'd finished seeing these, it would be 17:30 and we'd have to drive to a place to spend the night. Would there be accommodation, and where would we eat? Plus, my nerves were testy, so how did I feel about night driving and possibly another night at a rest stop?

The trade off began, and we headed direct to Shrewsbury in Shropshire (England). We got there in just enough time to catch the Visitors Center still open, paid the 2 pound commission for finding us a B&B accommodation, and we thankfully parked the car, freshened up, and walked into Shrewsbury for a pint at the Loggerhead (a pub so old it is being closed down for repairs in 2 weeks, as it is "falling into the street"). Then we searched for dinner...most everything was booked up, but after some coercion, I had Stephen agree to Thai food. Which was a winner. Tempura vegetables, spring roles, jasmine rice, green curried veggies with coconut milk, sweet & sour vegetables (with Pinneapple). And a bottle of rose. The town itself was full of half-timbered buildings, craggy alleys, old churchs, bridges...but then a few ugly modern cement buildings and high street stores. However, the feel of the town is quite pleasing as there is a lot of independent shops for food and crafts. Seems to have a good mix of music, art, museum, history etc...and a "stumpy redstone mass" of an Abbey. The River Severn loops around the town, and its history is of an old Roman post, as well as a staging post, and thriving market town. Mostly we were happy to casually stumble across a town so easy to accommodate the last-minute traveler and pleasing to be in.

Sunday, Easter, we woke up and enjoyed a scrumptious vegetarian breakfast at the B&B breakfast room. It was a little like fawlty towers in that a husband and wife shared all the duties of checkin/checkout as well as cooking and serving breakfast. They were very efficient, but I could imagine if someone rang the desk bell demanding to check out during breakfast--all hell could break loose!

We decided to spend the day leisurely driving back to Woking via the Cotswolds and Vale of White Horse. However, my body was not to have it. After about an hour of driving, I told Stephen I was feeling the first signs of stressing out, and wasn't sure how much I could do today. We decided the smart and safe thing to do (also in interest of avoiding unnecessary arguments) was to drive directly back to Woking via the motorways. Four hours later we were home. And a good choice too..I sprawled out on the bed, arms outstretched, numb.

However, we saw a lot, and hopefully once it's all absorbed, we'll have some more in depth observations to make.

In the meantime, some pictures---

HAPPY 25TH + 6 BIRTHDAY STEPHEN!
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: Elisabeth's Entries

The man is another year older today, and where else should we celebrate but Wales' capital city, Cardiff (or Caerdydd). And probably spending most of the day stuck on the motorway...but hey...life's a journey, even in a traffic jam.

My driving is a bit rusty, but we'll make it in the end.

A lovely weekend to all.

Hangover alert!
Mood:  lazy

So it's all happenin'...Stephen's handed in his resigation, I've given my verbal resignation, plane tickets booked, piano advertised for sale, and I'm thinking ahead to life back in Canada. I look forward to a change of pace and spending more time in the performing arts. Nevermind being able to live in a city again...

However, it's not back to student-style living for me. I took a trip down memory lane on Sat. night, and got absoluetly falling-down drunk..and did not remember falling down. Stephen's co-worker had a musical-inspired costume party to break in her new flat in Greenwich. Some pix:

There was a mean punch, which I had way too much of, so by the time we left, I was walking/puking/passing out.

I did not feel good the next day, and only when I got home did I discover I had lost my glasses. Shock! Hangover-horrer!

Luckily they were in the bearded blokes' car & he dropped them of 15 min. before I had to be at work.

Today's been rough to say the least--2 day hangover. oh boy. No student life for me... it's just stupid. Poisonous. But fun...

I got home, and my ever-surprising husband had made stuffed artichokees & cheesy bubble & squeak...almost all of it organic.

This weekend we're renting a car (now that my glasses have been found ) and are going to drive around Wales for a couple of days. Did we already mention this...I'm not the most alert right now...

Last night, after work, Stephen & I met at the pub, then went to eat at the best restaurant in Woking: L'Aroma. I learned that one reasons why northern Italians resent the southern Italians is that they see them as using a larger share of tax money, while contributing less into the coffers. It was presented to me that southern Italians like to enjoy life, the sun, the beech and food. They like a slower pace of life. And I was told that northern Italians are seen by southerners as being very much a part of the Europe machine...living their lives like clockwork, timed around making money and maximizing effiency. Personally, I hate the culture of money.

I thought this article on cbc.ca was interesting:

Jeremey Kinsman: opinion on Canada/Europe relationship

We're both hungover today (we went back to the pub after dinner...whoops)---Stephen's worse off as he has a 13 hour shift ahead of him, and oh yeah, he has to work with insane people!

This weekend we both have off, and my brother Stephen & his wife Laura will be visiting us on Sunday---hopefully we'll all drive down to Robertsbridge/Battle area of East Sussex to see where my mother's family originated.

And...it's spring! Officially! Although mother nature's reward was to have it snow yesterday...go figure.

I'm blogging, mostly out of guilt. Stephen's sleeping in at work tonight, so I'm left to entertain myself for a whole evening. What have I done so far? Well, I ate two portions of spaghetti & organic tomato sauce. I ate the leftover apple crumble. I've read some more of Michael Palin's Diaries, talked on the phone, and am trying to plan out my calander for the next couple of weeks.

Much is going on behind the scenese these days, with friends, family & work. It keeps us on our toes, and our heads on our pillows. All will be revealed in time I'm sure.

And did you know Stephen A's birthday is coming up on 6th April? He'll be 31. But DON'T! do anything...he doesn't like it ;)

What to say?
Mood:  not sure

I am so happy Stephen's taken it upon himself to blog about the trip. I do not even know where to start, for once started, I will have to blog for a long time, and even then, doubt that I will suffiently communicate the trip and my reactions to the experiences. Maybe I'll be up to it soon...

Suffice it to say, that in my travel-log I advised my future self to remember to pack nail clippers and bandaids, and to really only plan to wear 1-2 outfits over the course of a week.

So in the absense of words, more pictures will have to do:

I actually have nothing to say. It feels strange to feel that nothing has happened over the course of a few days--even though I feel I've been busy. I've just been working, Stephen's been working, he went to see ...Trail of Dead on Tues. night, I dontated blood yesterday...and the list runs out there. The flat is pretty filthy and we have no plans for tonight.

Later..

Monday catch-up
Mood:  lazy
Topic: Elisabeth's Entries

Since the last post, we have generally been eating and drinking and being lazy. Thurs. night we went to our favourite Italian restaurant, L'Aroma and had prosecco, wine, limoncello and delicious food. Then we went to the pub for more.

Needless to say I was quite hungover at work on Fri. and couldn't wait to go to bed. Saturday Stephen had to work, and I went to see David Hare's "Amy's View" at the Garrick theatre in London.

I really enjoyed the play, and the lead actress was wonderful. However, seeing a play on the westend is god awful. People going in and out of the theatre, mobile phones going off, opening cans of soda, coughing, unwrapping plastic foil, whispering... all throughout the show and it just drove me crazy. People weren't there to learn, just to be entertained...but perhaps it had something to do with the fact I was sitting in the "gods" which was far enough away from the stage that binoculars were available for rent for 50p.

Anyway, Sunday we just chilled out, ended up at the pub, and then drinking at home (what's going on?!) and then watched State of Play, an excellent BBC 6 part TV series.

I've gotta go to work now...

Niagra Falls is streeming down our windows this morning, despite the dehumidifyer. This means that the temperature outside is cold enough to feel like Feb. in England. Before I go to work, I'll mop up the pool of water that when overflows, trickles into all of our electrical equipment.

To catch up the last few days...over the weekend we went out with Stephen's co-workers, Stephen then worked and I chilled out.

Today we're going to see The Dumb Waiter by H. Pinter in London. We're taking the fellow that I've been tutoring.

Not much more to say right now...
