The Murder of Frank Valdes Happened on Michael Moore's Watch
https://www.angelfire.com/fl4/prison/miamiherald.html

"Warden James Crosby, who was on vacation and jogging when he received a call about an inmate believed to be dead, came to the prison. Capt. Thornton and other officers briefed him. Crosby, now a regional prison director, initially thought the officers could be in trouble for not properly handling an inmate hurting himself. With investigators on the way, Crosby suggested the prison officers wait together in a conference room. Later, Crosby told investigators "someone had gotten the perception I had helped or told the officers how to handle their story." He said he did nothing of the kind."

"What is Florida's Secretary of Corrections Michael Moore thinking? Crosby is at the helm of a prison so full of brutal guards and inept or indifferent grievance administrators that a man died under his watch. And what is the system's response? Promotion." ~St Pete Times Editorial; A case for cleaning up our prisons October 11, 2001

Verdict on prisons: Evidence of abuse despite guards' acquittal

If Moore is really interested in reform, he'll open prisons to independent
monitors -- including international human-rights organizations, who isolate
Florida's prison system as one of the worst in the nation.

SERIOUS ABOUT DOC SPORTS
https://www.angelfire.com/fl4/fci/FSPDOCsports.html

On July 22, 2001, many Florida newspapers carried articles about Michael Moore removing all typewriters and word processors from the Florida prisons.  Actually, he just removed the ribbons in them, but either way, prisoners must begin to handwrite their cases and appeals Moore claims the typewriters cost too much to maintain.  REMOVING TYPEWRITERS

If Michael Moore would get serious about ridding the DOC of people who are doing criminal things, this young lady and others like her could do their work in peace. Sexual Harassment in the FDOC

"Much of the public want the inmates to be uncomfortable.  Former DOC secretary Michael Moore used to brag about how the inmates didn't have air-conditioning and other amenities like TV and recreation equipment." An Officer on PROFESSIONALS RESPOND

"We think DOC Director Michael Moore should have a review panel made up to include citizens, inmates, and their families." ~ Kevin Aplin, Prison Walls Begin to Talk; Sept. 1999

"I watched the news cast from your Orlando gig last year about the abuse of prisoners, and I admit that those things did and do still happen to this very day. This is why Bush and MM must go before things will start to improve. Don't get me wrong, these sort of things happened before their arrival but things have gotten way out of control and I am often intervening in situations I see leading to such acts." ~ DOC Officer, Crossing the Khaki Line 08/29/2002

"FYI: The state laundry where I work has twenty-four full-time state employees. Only six of them do much; the inmates do the work. So if there's money for state featherbedding and all that nepotistic cronyism, why isn't there money for food? Even the guards here are mad. They claim this is a scheme by Michael Moore to get the inmates to buck so there's a problem so he can close River Junction down. They claim it will cost the D.O.C. too much money to remove the rest of the asbestos and fix the pipes and all the rest. They're worried about their jobs, too. Michael Moore isn't, though. He's got a job. Him and Howell Winfree suck on things for a living." ~From Gary Waid's Smuggler's Tales of Jails; DOC Oranges Suck

"But - uh- first use your spell-checker, Juan.  Sprinkle some commas and things here and there, for christsake.  I wish I had a spell-checker.  Until you get a little better, I suggest you don't write Michael Moore about your concerns.  Kay will print you comments; she's cool.  But Michael will put them in his handy dandy Oliver North 2000 shredder.  Unless, hmm...no, couldn't be. But - ...this isn't you, is it Michael?  You're not Michael Moore, are you?  Pretending to be John/Son of Sam?  If this is you, Mr. Secretary, get off the keyboard!  Right now!" ~From Gary Waid's Smuggler's Tales of Jails; Food Fight

Corrections Secretary Michael Moore wants to eliminate the second rate supervision of vital medical matters and the general operations in Florida prisons. How can he possibly explain this when we already know there's real human suffering within those walls?

"My resignation letter, and follow-up letter (e-mail) to Secretary Moore is Public Record.  This information can be pulled directly from my file (Florida Sunshine Law), which is located at the Ft. Lauderdale Service Center (Region IV)." ~David Ortiz, C/O Hendry CI

Mr Moore is in a no win situation If he acknowledges that he is powerless to muzzle in the Frankenstein Monster he created, he has failed in his mission, and should resign or be fired. Mr Moore has stated that he will not tolerate physical abuse in the DOC, yet as John has said, it appears that the abuse is getting worse.

Mr Moore has to do one of three things: vigorously clamp down on the perpetrators, and fire a majority of his guard staff --- this abuse is too wide spread, in too many prisons and involving too many guards to be isolated "instances", and stop protecting his minions who are mayhem prone; Ignore the writing on the wall, and act as though nothing is wrong, citing each case of physical abuse as legitimate use of force to control naughty prisoners: That won't fly any more; Or call in the Federal Cavalry to oversee the prisons - that he will not do.

Unless he does something dramatic, the roof will cave in on him and his department. It will be a long hot explosive summer, and force -- anything short of a massacre, will not stop the unrest and perhaps worse from happening. Mr Moore, a deluge is brewing. You can be one swept away, or you can be a sweeper. Which will it be, Sir?" ~ Dr. G M Larkin, May 26, 2002

Despite What Michael Moore Says,
The Abuse by Errant Guards Continues

"There is increasing evidence that the Correctional Officers at UCI and FSP have been emboldened to increase the level of physical abuse of prisoners in the wake of the exoneration of the guards who murdered Frank Valdes.

Whether the [now ex-] Secretary of the FDOC, Michael Moore, would welcome new publicity on this subject is doubtful. However, I would suggest that this physical abuse is beyond his ability to control. He hired, indoctrinated, supervised and then protected those officers and now he is unable to restrain what he created [or at least tolerated], if, indeed, he even wishes to do so." ~ John May 27, 2002

"I will not be content until Michael Moore is fired with no letter of recommendation given. He carries meanness and trouble with him wherever he goes, and his rules cause riots." ~From Letter to Jeb Bush by Kay Lee
