Mr. Day was born June 25, 1813, at Chatham, Morris Co.,N.J. and was the youngest of nine children. In October, 1816, his parents removed to Wayne County, and settled on the Dyberry flats., in Dyberry Township. As he grew to manhood, the impaired health of his father and the removal of the elder children threw on him the chief cares and labors of the farm, and his management proved highly successful. His biographer in the recently published county history speaks thusly of him: "Lewis Day is a man of modest and assuming ways, industrius and judicious, and it may be well said of him 'that he ranks among the intelligent and thrifty farmers of Wayne County'. He is a great hunter and a good shot and has made bear, deer, adn other wild game acknowledge man's supremacy. He has a rifle, purchased in 1840, with which he has killed one hundred and thirteen deer. He has frequently killed three deer in a day and wounded a fourth." Nove. 6, 1838, Mr. Day married Nancy J., a daughter of Gideon Langdon, of Dyberry. She died Sept. 8, 1866. April 7, 1870, he married Margaret Dabron, a daughter of John Dabron, of Damascus, who survives him. The funeral services were held yesterday morning, the internment being at Bethany. Day died at his residence in this city yesterday, at half-past one o'clock, of paralysis. He was taken slightly ill on Wednesday night; but the stroke was not felt until Thursday morning. From that time until his death, he was conscious only at intervals. Mr. Day is one of the old pioneers of this city, having come to Portland at an early day. In 1856 he kept a store at the corner of Stark and Front Sts. in partnership with Captian Joseph Mynck. Subsequently he was largely interested in mining operations in Eastern Oregon, Idaho and Cariboo. He acted for some time as purser on board one of the O.S.N. Co's. boats. For the last year he was one of the clerks in the Quartermaster's Department. In the social relations of his life, Mr. Day was a sober, intelligent citizen, a kind husband, a genial companian, and a true friend. His business qualities were characteristic for exactness, punctuality and unswerving honesty. In his sudden death society and the community have suffered an irreparable loss. He was stricken down in the pride and strength of his manhood -- being in his thirty-ninth year -- and in the midst of a career of usefulness. He leaves a wife and many friends to mourn a loss which death has occasioned, and which time can never replace. -Daily Oregonian, May 6th, 1872. Funeral of the Late E. H. Day. - The remains of the late Ephraim H. Day were followed to the Lone Fir Cemetary, yesterday, by a large number of friends. The members of the several Masonic Lodges of the city attended. The body was consigned to the grave with the usual impressive rites of that order. The East Portland Brass Band was in attendance and discourced sad and dirge-like strains of music. -Daily Oregonian, May 7th. Mr. Day was formerly a resident of this county, and left for Oregon nineteen or twenty years ago. He was a brother-in-law of Lewis Demoss. He left many warm friends behind when he started for his far Western home, who will hear of his death with sadness. -Coshocton Democrat, May 28, 1872. More About EPHRAIM H. HAMLIN January 12, 1826. Notes for DAMARIS DAY: Damaris F. Hamlin was born in Chatham, Morris county, N.J. January 16th, 1804. Her maiden name was Day, she being the daughter of Stephen and Mary Day. Her childhood and early youth were passed in her native place. In 1816, being then in the 19th year of her age, she came with her parents into Wayne county, and settled on the farm now occupied by her brother, Lewis Day. Dyberry was then a wilderness; Honesdale had no existence; and Wayne county had but few inhabitants. Here for 10 years of her early life she lived with her parents partially unknown, but distinguished for her affectionate nature and kindness to the companions of her youth. On the 12th of January 1826, being then in the 22nd year of her age, she married the late Hon. E.W. Hamlin, with whom she lived as his counselor and help meet for over sixty years, exemplifying the virtues of his character, and respected and beloved by all around her. Immediately after her marriage she came with her companion to Bethany and commenced her life-work in the house where, with the execption of a few of her last days she spent the whole of her married life. Soon after her removal to Bethany in the bloom and vigor of her age, she chose the “One thing needful”, and consecrated the powers of her mind and body to the service of her Lord and Redeemer; united with the people of God and was a consistent member of the church for over fifty years. On the 7th of April, 1884, she buried her companion. She was then over eighty years of age. Since the death of her companion her health has gradually failed and a few days before her death she was carried by friendly hands to the residence of her only son Hon. E. Hamlin. Haines, Pub. 1902 Stephen Day, grandfather of Theodore Day, came from Chatham, N. J. and settled on the Dyberry in October, 1916, the year without a summer, and died at Bethany, Aug. 5, 1885, aged 96 years. His son, Edwin S. was in his seventh year when they came. August 10, 1836, Edwin and Fidelia Gleason were married and resided for seven years at Elizabethtown, N.J., where the subject of this sketch was born, November 12, 1837. They returned to Dyberry in 1843, and Theodore was educated in the public schools and the University at Bethany. He taught one term of school in Clinton and two in Oregon. His mother died April 17, 1861, aged 50 years, and he enlisted in Co. C, Sixth Pennsylvania Reserves, John S. Wright, Captain. Exposure and poor water soon took Mr. Day from the ranks and he served as commissary for five months without extra pay, and was honorably discharged May 10, 1862. His father died, Oct. 14, 1866, and on Nov. 14, 1870, Hester A. Dodge became his wife. She died July 19, 1893. Mr. Day's principal occupation has been grafting and pruning fruit trees. He is now testing grafts of new varieties on his place for the Department of Agriculture. He has kept a weather record since April 5, 1854. The thermometer was first used on January 1st, 1860. He has furnished monthly reports for the Smithsonian Institution, beginning in 1865, the Department of Agriculture, Signal Service, War Department, the U.S. Weather Bureau, and our State Weather service ever since they were established; also summaries for the county papers, all without compensation. He has also been a regular contributor to the local press and farm journals. He is a great lover of nature, a careful observer, possesses a good knowledge of fruits, is a constant reader and a man of far more than ordinary intelligence. Mr. Day has two sisters and two brothers residing in the area, namely, Mrs. Laura A. Adams, of Oregon, Mrs. Alice G. Goodnough, Oscar H. Day, both of Rileyville; and George M. Day, of Dyberry. 20. ii. GEORGE M. DAY, b. October 08, 1840, New Jersey; d. April 29, 1927, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. 21. iii. LAURA A. DAY, b. 1842, New Jersey; d. Pennsylvania. 22. iv. Generation No. 3 9. ELIAS OGDEN10 WARD (JANE9 DAY, STEPHEN8, STEPHEN7, JOSEPH6, PAUL5, GEORGE4,NICHOLAS3, JOHN2 DEE, MORGAN1) was born February 05, 1810. He married EMALINE AMY FARRER, daughter of ELIAB FARRER and JEMINA UNKNOWN. Notes for ELIAS OGDEN WARD: From Matthews: Rev. Elias O. Ward, who for nearly a half century has been a minister of the Presbyterian Church, and for the past thirty-three years pastor of the First Presbyterian Church at Bethany, Pa., was born at Chatham, N.J., February 5, 1810. He removed with his parents from Chatham to Bethany in 1924, and for a few years worked there in the trade of a hatter. Early religious influences impressed him and in 1832 he began studying for the ministry with Rev. Preston Richardson, of Hartford, Susquehanna County, Pa, under whose tutorship he was prepared for college, and entered the second term of the Freshman Class at Hamilton, in 1934. He was graduated from this institution in the Class of 1838, and in September of the same year entered the Theological Seminary at Auburn, N.Y. from which he was graduated after the usual course of the three years study. On September 16, 1841, he was licensed to preach at Great Bend, and four days thereafter preached his first sermon at Hartford, where he had begun his studies nine years before. On October 4, following he preached as a candidate in the Presbyterian Church at Dandaff, was accepted, and remained as pastor of that church for twelve years. During his incumbency as pastor he labored faithfully in every good work in the interest of the church and sought to promote and foster Christian unity. He saw his labors successfully crowned by many and frequent accessions to the church rolls, together with a general religious sentiment in the community. With the beginning of his ministry began also his married life, for, on October 14 of the same year he married Emeline Amy, daughter of Eliab and Jemina Farrer, of Hartford, whose parents were from Massachusetts, and both died at Hartford. For forty-five years Mrs. Ward has shared with him the loyalty and devotion of the church and bore up his hands in time of depression. She is a woman of high Christian character, in full sympathy with all religious work, and the helps and hospitality requisite to make a pastor's home the welcome place for all. In 1853, having closed his labors with the church at Dundaff, he was settled with the church in Bethany, where he as remained faithful to his trust until the present time (1886). During this long period as pastor he was been at the head of the Sunday school, and as its superintendant, has so led the youth of the vicinity in Bible instructions, as to make the school the true feeder of the church. Nor have his labors been confined to the church and Sunday school at Bethany, for he has, through a long series of years been active in the establishing and keeping up Sunday schools in neighborhoods outside of Bethany, where is labors have also been largely successful. For many years he has been officially and otherwise identified with the Wayne County Bible Society. Rev. Mr. Ward's name is probably more familiar in Wayne and adjoining counties than almost any other minister of the gospel, from the fact, that during his long sojourn in Bethany his acquaintance has obtained a wide range, and during his ministry he has joined in wedlock some four hundred and thirty couples, and been called upon to bury four hundred and sixty persons. He has taken an active interest in schoolwork, and for a little over six years served as school superintendent of Wayne County. His proficiency in this capacity is well known, and has worked inestimable benefits to the schools of the county. His father, Moses Ward (1784-1867) and mother, Jane (1790-1871), daughter of Stephen and Mary (Bonnell) Day, were both natives of New Jersey, were memebers of the Presbyterian Church, and their remains rest in the cemetary at Bethany. Moses Ward was a carpenter by trade, was engaged in building the Gravity Railroad, and was in the employ of that corporation the remainder of his active life. His maternal grandparents settled on Dyberry Creek, in Dyberry township in 1816. A sketch of them can be found in another part of this volume. The other children of Moses and Jane Ward were Stephen D. (1818-71), clerk and cashier in the Honesdale Bank for many years; Mary Budd (1811-33) was the mother of the late Mrs. Thaddeus Fitch, of Honesdale. The children of Rev. Elias O. and Emeline Amy Ward are Stephen Day, served in the late Civil War in the Army of the Potomac, was in the Peninsular Campaign with McClellen, and in the battles of Chancellorville and Second Bull Run. He died soon after the latter battle in Fairfax Seminary Hospital, Va., September 8, 1862, aged twenty years and eight days. Edward Oscar married Alice, daughter of Hon. A.B. Gammell, and is a merchant at Bethany, and Mary Elizabeth is the wife of Dr. Reed Burns, of Honesdale, Pa. Children of ELIAS WARD and EMALINE FARRER are: i. STEPHEN DAY11 WARD, b. Two sons having given up their lives during the civil war, one dying in Libbey Prison and the other of wounds received in battle. The funeral services were conducted at 2 pm Sunday by Mrs. Over and appropriate music was furnished by a quartet consisting of Mesdames Cook and Over, and Messrs. Wipple and Smith. From Obit sent to me by Dellie Craig: Obituary for William Sanford Day out of the The Citizen, Cambridge, Idaho newspaper October 19,1900. Death of Samuel Day Samuel Day, a brother of B. B. Day, died at the Inland hotel in Salubria last Saturday and was buried Sunday. Mr. Day was 86 years old. He was an old timer in this country, having lived for a number of years on a farm on the Salmon river not far from Warren. During the last two years his health had been failing and be had been making his home with his brother. He Had been suffering from rhematism and a complication of troubles, and the cause of his death might properly be termed old age. During his daty in Salubria. Samuel Day made many friends; in fact to know him was to be his friend. He was always good natured and had a pleasant word for everyone with whom he came in contact. The familiar face of the old man will be missed by his Salubria friends. Notes for REBECCA HART: Died of Typhoid Fever, 1851 Children of WILLIAM DAY and REBECCA HART are: i. LEWIS J.11 DAY, b.
