Generation 6

13. JOSEPH6 DAY (JOSEPH5, JOSEPH4, JEREMIAH3, RALPH2, RALPH1) was born 21 Dec 1791 in Herkimer or
Oneida County, NY33, and died 22 Mar 1854 in Arkwright, Chautauqua Co, NY.
He married ANNA [--?--] Abt. 1814 in Wayne or Ontario Co, New York State. She was born 05 May 1796 in
New York, and died 01 Apr 1875 in Arkwright,
Chautauqua Co, NY34.

Notes for JOSEPH DAY:
Joseph Day was the eldest son of Joseph and Mary Day. They lived in German Flatts, Herkimer Co NY
in 1790 and in Westmoreland twp, Oneida County, NY in 1800. In the "Day Family History" he is not
listed as the Eldest. His sister Polly was supposedly born in 1791, the year after her parents
marriage in Aug, 2, 1790, However, his age changes on the federal census indicates a birth
year of 1790 or 91 for him. He was named Joseph for his father and grandfather.

When the elder Days immigrated to Nissoui twp, Ontario Canada, Joseph, Polly (Day) Crowell,
Betsy (Day) Ruttenbur, and one other sister remained behind.....probably Susan could
have remained and gone up later when her brother Elmer returned to Canada in 1829.
The "Day Family History" says the older children were afraid of Indians and so remained in NY state.
It is unknown if Asineth or Susan is the youngest, though it appears to be Asineth born after Susan

Joseph Day Jr and his young family are found in the 1820 Federal Census in Ontario, Ontario Co, NY.
Series M33, Roll62, Page 77:

This breaks out as follows:

Males under 10 = 1 William Day

Females 10-16 = 0
Females 16-26 = 1 Anna, wife of Joseph
Females 26-45 = 0
Females 45 & up = 0

The family seemed  to have moved by the 1830 Federal Census to Walworth town, Wayne Co NY;
Roll: M19_117; pg 30, but the local historian says it was not a move, just that Wayne County took that
part of Ontario County, and that Walworth town formed from the southern part of the old Ontario twp.

Females 40-50 = 1 Anna
No older female entries.
This indicates that the two older daughters both married in the 10 year interim.
Check marriages Chautauqua and Wayne County, NY.

Of note, Joseph Day's brother, Dexter B Day and Dexter's brother-in-law Joel Cass were in Chautauqua Co, NY
for the 1830 census and Joseph appears to have followed shortly after 1830 as his young daughter, Eliza,
died in Chautauqua Co. in June, 1834. His sister, Betsey Day Ruttenbur also lived and died in
Chautauqua Co.

From the records of Burnham Hollow Cemetery, Arkwright, Chautauqua Co, NY one can determine
that the Joseph Day Jr family moved there before June 28, 1834 when their daughter, Eliza Day, died.

Lois does not fit the ages for any of the Day daughters on 1830 census, so assuming till research
further that she is wife of William.
(JMNelson 5/15/2003)

Anna outlived Joseph and was found living next door to her son, William and Lois Day in the 1870
census in Arkwright with a real estate value of $900 while William age 56, Farmer and Lois,
age 48 have a real and personal value of $400.

Notes for [--?--] DAY:
Checking the 1850 census for Chautauqua County,NY there were only two males found the correct age to
be the missing son. One had a child age 14 which ruled him out, as the unknown son was still
in Joseph's home in 1840. The other was an Anthony W Day, age 24, m, Farmer and ??Corier??,
b. NY with a wife only, Lydia A Day age 26, f, b. NY. They were living in the next Township, Charlotte.

However, by 1860 they were found in Waupun, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin with two sons,

14. POLLY6 DAY (JOSEPH5, JOSEPH4, JEREMIAH3, RALPH2, RALPH1) was born 1793 in Prob. German Flatts, Herkimer Co,
NY40, and died 23 Aug 1845 in Postville, York Twnshp, Green Co, WI. She married WILLIAM C CROWEL
Abt. 1810 in NY, son of SETH CROWEL and MARY BATTLESHEL. He was born 1779 in Vermont41, and died
25 Feb 1860 in Postville, York Twnshp, Green Co, WI42.

Notes for POLLY DAY:
From "The Day Family History" Chapter Eleven, page 149: "The Second Generation. Joseph Day arrived
in Canada in 1821. He brought with him four of his eight children. The other four remained in
New Your State. The concerns and deliberations which must have preceded such a family breakup will
certainly never be fully understood. Chapt 11 presents the statistical infromation gathered for
the most part by Alta and Sigmund Runyon, as it relates to the sons and daughters of Joseph and Mary Day.
There is no reliable information available for their eldest son Joseph Jr., or their daughter Asenith."

Polly Day Crowel was one of the children who remained in New York State, having married Wm C Crowel
about 1810 and with a young family. Later she and William migrated to Geauga Co, Ohio and thence
to Green County, Wisconsin.

Polly Day Crowel came to Green County, York Twp with her family about the time her brother, Dexter B Day
and his family migrated there in 1841. Per information received from a volunteer in Green County,
she is buried with several of her family. The cemetery, formerly called York Burying Ground,
is in Section 23, named Green's Prairie. There used to be a small village ("gathering") called
Postville there. See "History of Green County" for more information on the Crowel and Day families.

Of note: the surname has been found spelled with single letter l at the end and with double l's.
As the family all used single l's on their headstones, have changed my listings to the single form.
Of course it may be found spelled differently by many census takers, from Crol, to Croel, to Cowell, etc.

The cemetery has the following Crowel Listings and was "walked" in 1969:

Polly wife of Wm Crowel, died 23 Aug 1845, aged 52 years. The stone was broken when the cemetery
headstones were copied in 1969.
Per her headstone, it computes that she was born in 1793.

More About POLLY DAY:
Burial: Aug 1845, York Burying ground, Sec. 23 Green's Prairie Cemetery.

Notes for WILLIAM C CROWEL:
William Crowel and family were found in the 1820 Census at Ontario Town, Ontario Co, NY; 1830 census
at Byron Town, Genesee Co, NY; 1840 census at Otto Town, Cattaraugus Co, NY, each time near a Day
family. From 1842 on, near Dexter B Day family.

In the 1850 Fed'l census of York twp, Green County Wisconsin the census taker spelled the name Crowel
as Croel consistently for all the family members.
****
There were only 40 families in the entire township of York. Among these there was only one Betsy,
listed as the wife of Sylvenor Conkey. This may be the one daughter not identified, but I will
not include this family in the tree until further proof that this Betsy was indeed Betsy Crowel:

21/21 Sylvenor Conkey age 43 M Farmer Real $600 b. Vermont
Betsey B Conkey, age 39, F, b. New York
Amos Conkey, age 19 M Farmer b. New York

15. BETSY6 DAY (JOSEPH5, JOSEPH4, JEREMIAH3, RALPH2, RALPH1)
was born 02 Apr 1795 in Herkimer or Oneida Co, NY43, and died 13 May 1876 in Chautauqua Co, NY.
She married DANIEL RUTTENBUR 15 Dec 1814 in Walworth, Wayne Co, New York44, son of JENKS RUTTENBUR
and BETSY CARPENTER. He was born 23 Dec 1789 in Providence RI, and died 04 Jun 1857 in Chautauqua Co, NY.

Notes for BETSY DAY:
Betsey's parents, Joseph and Mary Day, lived in German Flatts, Herkimer Co NY in 1790, then moved
by Oneida Co by 1800. Betsey is in the 1800 census as a female under age 10, so born in one of the
two counties.

Notes for DANIEL RUTTENBUR:
From "The Day Family History" page 154: " In May 1832, Daniel and Betsey (Day) moved from Walworth to
South Hill [Chautauqua Co] NY, where their youngest son Jerome was born in a log cabin in 1840.
This community was about 2 miles south of Hamlet, which was called Omar at that time. The land
was covered with trees when they arrived. Daniel, like most of the Ruttenburs, was a farmer.
They were also great woodsmen."

The move in May 1832 would mean that Edwin C and Martha L also were born in the same cabin as
their brother Jerome.

Ibid: page 163: Betsy Day was a sister of the four children who accompanied Joseph Day to Nissouri Township.
She had married Daniel Ruttenbur in Walworth, New York Dec 15, 1814, seven years before the
emigration to Canada.

Betsy and Daniel had three children and were expecting a fourth when the Day family went off to Canada
to start a new life. Daniel Ruttenbur Jr. describes the Ruttenbur history in Chapter 12."

Ibid: page 165: "The Ruttenburs: "Who were the Ruttenburs? Where did they come from?"
These questions have been asked by every family who inherits the name; but never have been answered.
Beyond the fact that they were descendants of a German Family which migrated to America about the
close of the 17th century, we have neither records nor tradition which throw any light on earlier history.
We can, therefore, only express a theory that we entertain in regard to their origin and history.

Tradition states that the first immigrant was Daniel Rutenberg who settled in Providence RI during the
latter part of the 17th century.  We call this tradition for we have no written evidence of its truth;
yet it is not wholly unsupported by family and legal records. We find testimony in records in Providence
of two brothers, who may have been the sons of Daniel, to whom the tradition refers and one of whom was
David Rutenberg, a genealogical account of whose descendants has been preserved nearly complete.
The other brother is known only thru his sons, John and Thomas, who appear to have been born at dates
corresponding with the births of the children of their Uncle David.

First generation, John Ruttenburge born 1643 and died 1723. He located in Providence RI. He was a rope
maker and bought and sold real estate, according to the records. He married in 1670 to
Mary Shippee who was born 1645 and died 1702. She was the daughter of David and
Margaret (Scranton) Shippee. John and Mary had 9 children who were: John, Mary, David, Peter,
Margaret, Susannah, Katherine, Ruth and Mercy. After Mary's death John then married Sarah in 1703
at Warwick, RI who died in 17?7. They had two children: Thomas and Solomon. The son David Ruttenberge
is the one we are concerned with. He was born in 1675 in Providence, RI and died in 1754.
He was a carpenter and a miller at Olyneyville which is now a part of Providence. The site of the
old mill is now a part of a playground for children. He married on May 5, 1727 at the age of 52 to
Hannah Jencks who was born in 1704. She was the daughter of Daniel and Catherine (Balcom) Jencks.
They had 5 children who were: Ruth, Daniel, John, Anne and Amey.

Daniel Ruttenberge was born in 1730, Providence, RI (Western Branch) and died May 1776.
He married Innocent Healy (she was of French parentage) of Mighton Mags. She was born
August 8, 1737 and died in May 1810. They had 8 children who were: Betsy, Sarah, David, Zilph, Jencks,
Rhonda, Daniel and Sylvanus.

Jencks Ruttenbur (notice the name change) was born August 25, 1767 and died 1853. He married
Betsey Carpenter of Providence RI who bas born in 1768 and died 1810. They moved to Adams, Mass.
and then moved to Arkwright Township in Chautauqua County, N.Y. where he bought land and settled.
He was a man of great activity and strength and retained his vigor until shortly before his death.
In stature he was over 6 feet high. He lived to see the 5th generation of his descendants.
He died at the age of 76 years and is buried in the cemetery at Hamlet, N.Y. He was a soldier in the
War of 1812. His sons, Timothy and Daniel were both drummers in the war. The children of Jencks and
Betsy were: Timothy, Daniel, Sally, Rhoda, Betsy, Deborah, Polly and Benjamin.

Daniel Ruttenbur, who was born in 1790 and died in 1857, married Betsy Day, who was born in 1795 and
died in 1876. They came from Walworth, N.Y. in Wayne County to the South Hill Community in May 1832.
They married on December 15, 1815. Betsy's parents were Joseph Day and Mary Marbray.
(Ted. Day's records shows this name as Mary Mowry.) They had 10 children who were:
	1. Electa, born 1815, died 1893 Married Henry Smith (4 children)
	2. Nancy, born 1817, died in youth
	3. Porter, born 1819, died 1891, married Lydia Babcock, (8 children)
	4. Olive, born 1822, died 1901, married James Parks Abbey, (3 children)
	5. Myron, born 1824, died in infancy.
	6. Laurinda, born 1827, died at infancy.
	7. Daniel, born 1834, died 1887, married Martha Tanner, (3 children)
	8. Edwin, born 1836, died at infancy
	9. Martha, born 1837, died 1901, married Walter Beech Parks, (7 children)
	10. Jerome, born 1840, died 1912, married Georginna Waite, (1 child)

The majority of Daniel and Betsy's children lived and died in Chautauqua County. Many of their
descendants are spread throughout the United States.
