Notes for Theodore Barber DAY
Served in C Company, 2nd Wisconsin Regiment (Volunteers) in Civil War.
Wounded at Antietam. See history. Entered Washington Old Soldier's
Home, Retsil, Washington, 16 May 1913. SOURCE: Marriage to Rachel and
to Anna, Department of Interior Bureau of Pensions Certificate No.131916.
Theodore Barber Day was named after T. M. Barber who lived near Lancaster,
Grant, Wisconsin, when his parents, John and Elizabeth Day, arrived
there on Aug. 10, 1840. Mr. Barber gave employment to T. B.'s then teenage
half-brother, Johnson McKenzie. The Barbers became life-long friends of
the Days and McKenzies and it was in Mr. Barber's honor that John named
his son, according to Johnson McKenzie's obituary.
Theodore served in C Company, 2nd Wisconsin Regiment (Volunteers) in
the U.S. Civil War. He was shot in the knee at Antietam. The surgeons
wanted to amputate, but he refused and lay untreated for three days
until a nurse cleaned and bound his wound. He was then sent to a
hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. After his recuperation, he was
assigned to guard duty at the prison at Elmira, Chemung, New York. He
married Rachel Ann DAY, on 5 Dec 1865, at Blairsville, Penn., and
settled in Mt. Hope, Grant, Wisc., where their two children--William
Rufus DAY (1869-1940) and Charles C. DAY (1867-1960 )--were born. These
two children were raised by Anna. Ted and Rachel removed Iowa where
Rachel died and he married Anna. The family later moved to Hutchinson,
Reno, Kansas., where the couple's first five children were born.
Listed in the 1860 U.S. Census for Lancaster, Lancaster, Grant,
Wisconsin, as "Theodore B. Day" an apprentice wagon maker, born in
Wisconsin, and living with the D. A. Budd family. See page 127.

Notes for Anna Amelia KOECKE
Second wife of Theodore Barber Day
BURIAL: Odd Fellows Cemetery, Ellensburg, Wash. Tombstone says her
middle initial was "E", however there is no question that this is the right
woman, as the inscription lists her as wife of T.B. Day. Certificate Record 209,
Registered No. 312, lists her middle name as "E". Wayne Koecke lists her
as Anna Emilie Koecke, and Helen Blomgren Day Barrett lists her as
Anna Emillia Koecke.
Grandson Robert Zindel said she reverted to speaking German on her death bed.
1900 Census for Lost Prairie, Wallowa, Ore., taken 21 June, she immigrated to
U.S. in 1858. Both of her parents listed as born in Germany. On this
date, children Walter M., Jay A., Paul G. and Theodore J. all were
listed as living at home. Also in the home was Anna's father, Gotfried,
then 84 years old and a widow.
DEATH: Wayne Koecke, Tacoma, Wash., information had Anna's death date
listed as 9 September 1872; ;however Wayne noted that he believed this was in
error, and that Anna died 9 December 1918 in Ellensburgh, Wash. It seems
clear that this is the same person, in which case the 1918 date is correct.
