Descendants of George Day

Generation No. 1

1. GEORGE6 DAY (JOHN5, JOHN4, SAMUEL3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1)
was born Abt. 1775 in Pennsylvania,
and died August 1838 in Ross County, Ohio.
He married (1) CATHERINE WEAVER.
He married (2)SARAH COX
September 18, 1836 in Ross County, Ohio.

Notes for GEORGE DAY:
From HISTORY OF HIGHLAND AND ROSS COUNTIES, 1880,
"Liberty Township"

"George Day and family settled in Liberty Township at some time about the
year 1805 to 1808.
They came here from Botetourt County, Virginia, and, on their arrival,
settled on section eigtheen, a part of which Mr. Day owned. The
section was entered by Thomas Bowens, who sold Mr. Day one
hundred and ten acres. In 1831 he sold the land and went to
Indiana, where he remained until 1834, when he
returned, and, after a few years, died. He was by trade a
tailor, and worked in his house. Of his family of seven
children, Mrs. Margaret Gates lives in Harrison township,
and, William Day in Londonberry.
The latter followed the business of a gunsmith, in the village,
from 1831 to 1860. For eighteen years he was a justice of the
peace in the township."

THREE SPECULATIONS ON GEORGE DAY'S FOREBEARS:

Option # 1:
This George Day MAY be identical with the George Day who was
the son of Joseph Day and Catherine Yarnall.

Joseph Day was a Quaker, who was born in Pennsylvania on
December 7, 1740 and died in Botetourt County,
Virginia about 1798. This Joseph Day had a son George Day who
was born supposedly in 1766. This George Day is said to have
been married to an Elizabeth. No other information is recorded
in the Quaker records as to children, death date or death
location (although there is lots of information about the
rest of Joseph's children). Joseph and his wife Catherine were
both active Quakers.

The two Georges may be identical because: 1) Both are associated
with Botetourt County, Virginia;
2) Both were said to have been born in Pennsylania;
3) The George Day of Ross County, Ohio was associated
with various "former" Quaker families [George's son Abraham
married Mary Dixon, both of whose parents -
George Dixon and Catherine Cox - were children of "former"
Quakers.] Thus, "our" ancestor George may be the son of
Joseph Day of Botetourt County, VA. George Day was perhaps a
fallen away "former" Quaker who moved away from Botetourt County
for this reason. If he indeed "fell away" this would also
explain why there are so few records of him in the Quaker
records of Botetourt County, VA.

The two Georges may NOT be the same because
1) The George Day of Ross County was said to be married to
Catherine Weaver - Joseph Day's son George reportedly married
an "Elizabeth";
2) The George Day of Ross County was reportedly between 25-45
years of age in 1820 Census (i.e. earliest birth year 1775) -
Joseph Day's son George was reportedly born in 1766.

Isn't genealogy fun!?!

Option # 2:
Alternatively, according to the Day Family folks, George was a
son of John and Martha (Nichols) Day, whose earliest immigrant
ancestor was Elizabeth Daye a widow who came to Port Elizabeth,
New Jersey with five sons in about 1664. This connection
assumes George Day was a brother of Samuel Day, a revolutionary
war veteran from Virginia who was also an early settler of Ross
County, Ohio. Families often moved to new areas at about the
same time, thus George and Samuel might be brothers because they
both moved to the same County about the same time.
Interestingly, supposedly Samuel Day moved to Ohio, from
Pendleton County, Virginia. It is reported that George's son
Abraham Day may have been born in Rockingham County, Virginia,
which is immediately adjacent to Pendleton County, VA.
Hmmmmm.

Option # 3:
A third option for George Day is noted in a letter from the
1940's preserved by the Day Family folks. The letter,
written by one of Abraham Day's grandsons, reports a
remembrance of the correspondent's uncle Dan
(a son of Abraham's)
that Abraham's father George was "born on the Rhine," but was
specifically not of German descent but rather was Dutch
(with the name Day being a translitteration of a Dutch
name "Dah"). Since George Day reportedly was born in
Pennsylvania (according to his son's 1880 census record) where
many folks of German descent settled where they were
known as "Pennsylvania Dutch," perhaps this memory of
George "being of Dutch descent" is confused with a memory
that George came from the "Pennsylvania Dutch" area of
Pennsylvania. Or maybe it is true.

Very hard to guess which version is correct. The search
continues. For purposes of this ancestral tree Option # 2
is assumed, since it is the most popular version. However,
Option #1 also appears to be a quite viable theory.

Generation No. 3

7. LESLIE COMBS ("TOM")8 DAY (ABRAHAM7, GEORGE6, JOHN5, JOHN4, SAMUEL3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1)
was born July 08, 1848 in Liberty Township, Ross County, Ohio,
and died Aft. 1870 in (?).
He married CATHERINE ELLEN LIGHTFOOT October 28, 1870 in
Henderson County, Illinois, daughter of
GEORGE LIGHTFOOT and MARGARET DUNHAM.

Notes for LESLIE COMBS ("TOM") DAY:
Leslie C. Day (also called Tom Day) is a most illusive member
of the family. Family lore as reported by my mother's eldest
sister Leah) has little to report except Leslie was born in
Ohio, had the nick name of Tom, and that he died soon after he
married Catherine Ellen Lightfoot "in a trolleycar accident"
at an unnamed location and date. Another bit of lore, reported
by one uncle (Forrest Snyder] is the two may have divorced.
Whether that is speculation or based on more direct info in not
known, although available info suggests the marriage may have
been a bit of a shot gun wedding.

In the 1870 census of Henderson County, Illinois, taken in
July , Leslie's wife-to-be Catherine Ellen Lightfoot
is recorded living with her parents George W. and Margaret
Lightfoot [Census record taken July 13, 1870, page 91,
dwelling # 143]. Husband-to-be Leslie Day is recorded as
a "farm laborer" working on the nearby farm of Joseph Field
(age 50, born Ohio) [Census record taken July 8, 1870, p. 85,
dwelling # 60). Leslie and Catherine were married
per Henderson Co. Illinois records on October 28, 1870; their
only daughter Rose was born three months later, on
January 19, 1871 per the family bible. Curiously, baby Rose's
birth is recorded, as the final entry, in the bible
record not of her parents, but the old family bible of her
great-grandparents Amos and Sally Dunham, Catherine Lightfoot's
grandparents. Amos was long dead by 1870, but his aged widow
Sally was living with her daughter Margaret Dunham Lightfoot
and Margaret's husband George Washington Lightfoot, and their
children at the time of July 1870 census record. Perhaps
the prospects for a long and happy marriage for Leslie and
Catherine were shaky, or perhapsthe fact Leslie really did
die young in a freak trolley car accident, led the family to
record the baby in the old family bible instead of a new
bible of the new couple. Rose Day's birth name is recorded
as "Rosetta Day."

Leslie Day's fate after the January 1871 birth of his daughter
Rose is not known. No divorce or death information for Leslie
has yet been discovered.

In the 1870 Henderson County, Illinois census Leslie Day reports
his age as 22 and birthplace Ohio. There is no Leslie listed in
the 1870 Davis County, Iowa Census record for Eli Day's
household, which includes Leslie's assumed brothers Ira, Silas,
Daniel, and Simeon. Leslie's connection to Abraham Day is
assumed based on identical birthplace, identical birthdate,
identical (unusual) first name, and his absence from the
Eli Day household.

The discovery of Leslie's assumed parents Abraham and Mary Day
was the result of an exhaustive search I made of
every Day Household in every county in the 1850 Ohio census
(a rather tedious exercise I must tell you!).
Believe me when I report to you that no other "Leslie Day"'s
were discovered, of any age, in 1850 Ohio.
There are a ton of Day families, however, believe you me having looked at every one.

                                        Tom Berg, May, 1991

Epilogue: Happily enough, I have just received information from
Hugart Misskelley of Florida and Evelyn Den Hartog
of Iowa confirming without a doubt Leslie was indeed the son
of Abraham and Mary (Dixon) Day.
Thank you Hugart and Evelyn!
