A bit of history:
Clearfield County was formed from parts of Lycoming and Huntington Counties in 1804. This area was then known as Chincleclamouche Township. The history of the white man in the county dates from about 1783. Most of the land was divided into large tracts and given to the soldiers of the PA line for their services in the Revolutionary War. Other pieces of land here owned by investors from England and the larger cities in the east.
Clearfield was chosen as the county seat in 1805 and the first courthouse was built on the present site. The current courthouse was completed in 1862. The county jail was built in 1872. Clearfield borough was first incorporated in 1840.
*The name Clearfield is believed to have been taken from the cleared fields which the settlers found in the area.
Today, Clearfield serves as the county seat of Clearfield County. The area is also home to many organizations and events.
Each summer the Clearfield Riverfront Festival is held at Lower Witmer Park while the county fair is held in early August at the driving park/fair grounds.
Other attractions to the area include CAST (Clearfield Arts Studio Theater) which gives young and old alike a taste of the arts. CAST emphasises art, music, dancing and the ever popular theater. Rails to Trails, which extends from Clearfield to Grampian, a distance of about 10.5 miles is a scenic trip though the area by foot or bike. This trail follows an old rail road track through the wooded areas, farmland, and over bridges. A variety of events can be found in the area throughout the year also.
There is something here for the young and old alike to enjoy.
