On August 21-23, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts gathered at Raystown Lake Resort for a weekend together. 270 girls and leaders from such places in central PA as Hershey, Huntington, Sullivan and Clearfield counties, just to name a few.
Girls who attended this event had to be 13 years or
older due to the amount of freedom they were given. Each girl had the chance to pick what activities they wanted to do. They could choose from water slides, orienteering presented by the Huntington National Guard, canoeing, exploring caves or the arts among with many more. There was a variety of choices given to highlight the girls individuality, which was a big part of the weekend activities.
In the planning of the event the girl input was a huge part.
Much of the weekend was directed from this, such as the late night
beach party on the sand to the activities and even the Saturday night
skits and closing.
Their last night together included a barbecue dinner,
dances performed by Order of the Red Flame, skits by troops and girls.
The night concluded with a ceremonial ashes campfire. The ashes that were sprinkled on the fire had traveled the world and joined the ashes from other such campfires. These ashes were started in 1920 by Julliete Low and Eleanor Roosevelt. The list continues to grow and now claims over 30 pages that are kept in the council office.
The weekend was a success, with also including
Girl Scout traditions, new experiences and the main reason for the event: FUN.
