RURAL AND SMALL TOWN PROGRAMME

Rural areas in Haryana have undergone a sea-change since the Independence. More aggressive change started happening in Haryana after the State was carved out of the combined State of Punjab on November 1, 1966.

During Nineties, the globalisation has affected the State in many ways. The impact of such changes have rarely been studied in a professional manner. The community control through the institutions such as provision of literacy campaign was one of the hallmark. However, the gains in this area were not strengthened in a proper fashion.

At this time, the institutions of the State require an overhauling. The current CM of Haryana Chaudhary Om Prakash Chautala has initiated number of reforms in education and self-government. The local bodies have been strengthened in a way which provides decisive power in the hand of local community in villages and cities.

Rural and Small Town Programme is such an endeavour. The programme is seeking support from number of national and international agencies by developing partnership. We are keen to sponsor serious academic and research work on the problems of post-WTO scenario; entrepreneurship in unorganised sector; diversified agriculture and organic farming; Ayurveda etc.

PANIPAT HEALTHY CITY FOUNDATION COMES CLOSE WITH HPI

Healthy City Foundation of India has undertaken one of the important task of a broader project called Panipat City Challenge. As it is increasingly becoming clear that due to globalisation, city's economy (export of handlooms) has aggressively altered the city's living space, its environment, its culture, its peoples and what used to be a town of mosquito, has become a town of multiple problems and opportunities: indeed multiple challenges!

Most of the citizens now know it very well that air, water and general health of environment have deteriorated. The safety on roads, in houses, in work place has become compromised.

Malaria, AIDS and TB have all the trends of becoming deadlier, intractable. The susceptibility levels of poorer will be more due to inherent lack of sanitation, nutrition and primary health to such people. Number of institutions have shown interest.
Local Centre of Haryana Agricultural University is one of the important partner. It is Krishi Vigyan Kendra, at Ujha village. Its web page is www.angelfire.com/country/kvk/link.html

During June to August, 1999, 2000, number of community and research and development activities were organised. Students from US, UK were involved in control of helminthic parasite in children and domestic animals in and around Panipat,Sonipat, Ambala districts and at Bahadurgarh (Jhajjar District).
