The Forest and I
A hush falls around the trees,
Leaves flutter, dancing to the ground,
Spinning, turning in their fall
Landing where cushions of moss abound.
A doe poses in the sunlight
That filters through branches, like panes of glass.
She perks her ears in response to the leaves
As they touch upon the dew wet grass.
The spotted fawn at her side
Continues to feed and play;
Unaware of any danger
In the stillness of the day.
I have been here since early morning,
Felt the sun light on my face.
Listened to the quiet stillness,
Basked in the serenity of this place.
I am overwhelmed by the beauty,
The feel of God so near;
But aware I am a visitor,
And only a stranger here.
The forest has been here
Thousands of years before;
And when I am no longer,
Will continue for thousands more.
But at this very moment,
The forest and I are one;
We breath the same air,
Enjoy the same sun.
And when my time has ended,
And time has come for me to die
I’ll smile as I look back and remember
The deer, the forest, and I.
