She Flies With Her Own Wings
(I'd like to thank my brother Jody for this wonderful graphic and both he and his wife Cheryl for helping to give me the strength and encouragement to make this poem a reality...Love you both)
Alis Volat Propriis
(She Flies With Her Own Wings)
For many years, he held her back
He told her not to dream
He was like a river wild
She like a gentle stream
She craved for love and happiness
But kept it all inside
Spent her days in quiet fear
Tethered by his side
She watched the sky with wishful eyes
And dreamed of when she'd fly
Cried herself to sleep at night
As life just passed her by
Caged by lifes own cruelty
She was captured in his grasp
While he raised his hands in anger
Hers in prayer she clasped
One day her prayers were answered
For she left him far behind
Released the chains of hurt and hate
And all the ties that bind
Now she flies with her own wings
In skies pearlescent white
Loosed from the bounds of all her fears
She soars in graceful flight
Where she lands will still be seen
The worlds an open slate
She'll write a story all her own
For now she holds her fate
At last she's free, no longer caged
And no matter where she'll roam
Those injured wings, now greatly healed
Will guide her safely home
