Daniel M. Seyler

Daniel M. Seyler, from the Oley Valley/Friedensburg area of Berks County, Pa. Unfortunately, you do not seem to have his name listed, or listed as Augustus Seyler. I do not know if he had a brother/cousin/relative named Augustus, but that is a distinct possibility.

The information he, himself, recorded for the family lists his enlistment date as October 19, 1861. He states that he was assigned to Company K, under the command of Capt. (Levi? or Eli?) Daugherty, Capt. D. Keller and Col. J. M. McCarter. The J. M. McCarter. The unit was mustered into US service and assigned to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 6th Corps. He goes on to list the various battles in which the unit was engaged and states the he was discharged Dec. 31, 1863 at Harpers Ferry, VA and reenlisted as a veteran in the same company and regiment to serve an additional 3 year (or to the end of the war) under Capt. David Cumber, and Col. C. W. Bachman.

He, again, lists the various battles in which he participated and notes the he was wounded in the right foot during the Battle of Petersburg and spent 3 days in a field hospital before rejoining his regiment. He goes on to list the remaining battles and states that he was honorably discharged at the close of the war on June 27, 1865, near Washington, DC.

Dan Seyler was born Aug 10, 1844, and thus was seventeen years old at the time of his enlistment. After the War he became a farmer and orchardist in the Oley Valley and married Rebecca Leitzel. They became the parents of 10 children - 4 sons and 6 daughters. Dan Seyler died Oct 23, 1911, of an apparent heart attach, at age 74, while riding his horse a few miles from his home. His body was found along the side of the road where he fell. The horse returned home without him and a search was started to find him.

One of his 4 sons died as a 2-year-old infant, but all the others survived to adulthood. One of those daughters was my Grandmother-- my father's Mother.
