There are predators who will use different types of ploys or
lures to get your child or teen to go with them alone. The
following are only a few examples that we suggest the family read
together and have a practiced plan of action of WHAT SHOULD I DO?
A sex offender may tell a child or teen that there has been an accident and mom and dad want them to go to the hospital.
Notorious murderer, Ted Bundy, lured a teenager out of her house by saying that it was on fire.
The family should have a practiced plan of action in emergencies.
Having a secret family code name that can be given to the
person having to deliver an emergency message if the child or
teen needs to go with that person, is one way to make sure that
the parent has indeed given the message. Having a secret family
code name is good to have as long as it is not a simplistic name.
Sex offenders usually guess an easy code name to lure a child
away.
Many times a perpetrator will approach a child or teen to ask for directions or for help with finding a lost animal such as a puppy or kitten, or for help with their car, or stop to ask what time it is. These types of requests may vary and seem convincing depending on the creativity of the individual.
Parents should tell their child that only adults should ask other adults for directions. If a car slows down or stops by them, they should stand back out of reach of the car and be ready to run.
Make sure that you take time to talk and really listen to your child. He or she should tell you immediately if someone tries to get them to go in a car alone. In turn, you should notify authorities of this matter.
Recent releases have stated to instruct the child to place
there bike between there self and others. If a adult attempt to
pull them into a car to hold on to the bike preventing access
through the car door
These are the most appealing to teens for obvious reasons. Young adults can be attracted to a job and asked to go to a job interview held in a secluded location or the chance to compete in a beauty contest or the opportunity to star in a commercial and then are offered a private audition. Photography sessions can sometimes begin harmlessly, then wind up into pornography.
Have your son or daughter let you know where and by whom they
are being interviewed, share with them your reasons for wanting
to know. Chaperone your son or daughter's modeling sessions.
One of the most popular lures that we see today is an older person luring away a teen with the pretext that they love them and want to marry them or be with them forever. They tell them that they are grown up and can make their own decisions. The teen is initially treated like an adult. People who use this lure may become obsessed with the young person and can decide to hold them against their will, become violent or worse. Research has found that the younger the child the older the perpetrator.
Have your son or daughter let you know where they are and whom they are with. Always meet all of your child's friends and know where they live if practical. Talk to your child's friend's parents if you notice an adult "hanging" in the peer group.
TELEPHONE TIPS Please make sure that if your child or baby-sitter answers your telephone, he or she does not give out information that may lead a caller to your home. Examples of this are, address or directions to your home and information that the responsable adult is not home right now. |
