YACHT meeting minutes January 26, 1998

I. Yahoos and Hooliyahs (announcements)

* There is a meeting with Kristin Sampson about the 1998 Budget from SGA on Thurs. At 7pm. Anyone wanting to attend feel free.
*We ARE doing a Spring Break Trip this year. Details coming next week. Any ideas? Share them with mike or michelle.
*Scott volunteered to call Pete Berol about the conference dates.
*Ellie volunteered to remind Scott...
*Kwanza, new YACHT treasurer, reported that K-lee is on vacation and she will have solid budget info by next meeting.
*Letter sent around the room for TOM KURTZ.
*The Simple Way open house is Saturday, Feb 7th. All are welcome!
*Come help clean the Simple House this Saturday, or any day. The phone #: (215) 423-3598. There is also a small group leader meeting that afternoon.
*Shannon is taking people in on Saturday morning, and will be joined by Mike Elk’s and Danté’s youth group.n Meet 9am in Marriott.

*Shane’s points-- Volunteers needed to get donations from Princeon sometime this week; The Simple Way needs a church contact for parking space for their Double- Decker Bus. Keep your eyes peeled!
*Food Bank trip, Wednesdays, 3-7pm. Meet at 3 in the gym parking lot. Contact Mandy or Darren if interested in going.
*Future book sales: Let’s start a committee and make this a campus wide event. Talk to Noah Macy, Janae Sauder, or Mike Brix with ideas.
* HELP!! YACHT NEEDS STORAGE SPACE ON CAMPUS!!
II. Wild Tales of Lore and Certitude

*Shannon shared about Saturday in the city and suggested a "homeless for a day" project.

Devotions: Ellie (even though she forgot)
Announcements
Korryn:
*angel tree- she had 15 names of children to buy gifts for. The names are the kids that will be coming to campus on the 7th of December. She needs help in bringing them here so if you could help it would be appreciated. *if you sponsored a child you are to bring the gifts to Ellie’s room and she will take care of the rest.
Christyn:
petition about Nike, she passed it around.
Shane:
· Sheila, if you know her, Josh and Korryn are good friends with her and they will be leaving next semester and it is important for someone to make a strong relationship with her for a regular basis time.
· Some ideas are to clean the house and to have Kelly make up some labels to help her to find stuff.

Amanda:
· Nursing Home Christmas Day in two weeks. We would like to have people that can play instruments and sign. We would just like to have a lot of people there to show them a good time. They will love to see you and it will really mean a lot to them- more than you know.

Lydia:
She and Kristen took the food that they collected to city team. Ask her about it.

Darren:
The food bank trips have been going well and he said that it was great to see so many people and so many new people and that they are getting a lot of stuff done. Soon they will be making Christmas boxes so please take part in that.

Josh:
Planning a party for Sheila. More information next week. Think of ideas.

Mike:
WE NEED A TREASURER!! Maybe it is you!! think about it.
The thing on the Friday after thanksgiving. Let him know if you want to go and want to catch a ride. Brooke will also be driving and whiling to pick you up. She is coming from somewhere else that I forgot to write down- well I wrote it down but my handwriting was so bad that I cannot tell what it says. I think that it startes with a "d".

We will be having a spring break trip.

Brooke:
Remember to bring stuff from home. It is cold out there!!

Topics:
We talked about Hunger and Homeless Week and how we thought it went. Overall we said great. We also talked about the sleep out and shared what people had learned from it.


Minutes from 11.10.97
Announcements
Mandy -Going to the Food bank this week. Again five people are needed. They leave from the gym at 3:00pm on Wednesday.
Christyn -There will be a Hunger and Homelessness meeting Wednesday @8:30pm in the Kea Study Lounge.
- Nursing Home, Tuesday @ 4 in Marriott.
Michelle -Will be taking people to the food bank on Saturday, leaving at 12. If you would like to go to Philly in the morning and the food bank as well, mike will drop people off at the food bank after the Philly morning thing around 1. The trip is from 1-4 and you should get back by 5pm.
- The play that Michelle has been talking about(Haunted By God), is this Friday. She needs cars and drivers and will be getting in contact with the people that wanted to go.
Mike - Message from Lydia, the SGA president. They have collected can goods and want to be sure that they are not conflicting with any YACHT stuff. The church outreach small group my be interested in this.
- Messiah trip- people needed to go. Wed. 12pm- Thursday 12pm.
Debbie - people from here small group( church outreach) get to her an update on what you found out.

SPECIAL GUEST…ETS!!!(empty the shelters)

-Kwanza opened with some information she found from her small group. It was very interesting.
- ETS introduced.
- Talked about them, homelessness and poverty and how it effects the people, and human rights and how you can get involved.

Announcements by Denise- Church Outreach phone calls & SGA food drive **need drivers on November 19th;
Ellie- (for Kristen)- Hunger & homelessness Awareness Week **meeting Wednesday @8.30pm;
Brooke- next week will be an educational with ETS. bring friends;
Amanda- HHAW Thursday is International Day, 10-3pm Zack, Debbie, Lydia will have displays. Anyone interested in participating to share stories? Nursing Home- they're going Tuesdays, 4-6pm. and idea discussed for neighborhood outreach;
Korryn- Angel Tree project w/ Mariluz, let's get presents for kids;
Rebekah- HHAW-Tuesday is "A Day In The Life Of..." Paint your face and take a vow of silence for the day to represent unheard voices;
Michelle- bringing people to the play on Friday, who's going?, check on Service Learning hours with her, Marriott is donating lunches again, so anyone who donated their ID # can eat on Saturdays;
Mikebrix- Conference meeting after this one, T-Shirt contest items due Nov. 10th(T-shirts will be sold before we order them) we still need blankets, sign up for the Messiah trip, Nov, 12th-13th;
Mandy- sign up with her for Food Bank trip on Wed's from 3-6.30pm, they have had FUN!

Upcoming Pretty Big Events:

** November 3rd (Monday) - Forum with Eastern Administration, a time for voicing questions and concerns. It is very important that we attend this as a group, YACHT shirts and all. A time will be posted.
** November 14th (Friday) - This is the last day for the SGA food drive. Please make this a priority. The Church Outreach people will be in charge of contacting local congregations, etc. See Debbie Landis, Denise Mellinger or Linda Hernandez to help.
Also… "Haunted By God" 8pm @ Germantown Friends School. This is a one-woman play about Dorothy Day, the founder of the Catholic Worker Movement. Info? See Michelle. (she’s going)
** Arthur Jackson Appreciation Day (date pending) - Hey it needs to be done. Any ideas? Let us know.
** Messiah College visit (date pending) - ** 1998 Annual Conference - We need to form a committee to start putting this together ASAP. Interested? Talk to Mike.

Other important Info:

** FOOD BANK - Wednesdays from 3-7pm. Sign up if you want to go by calling Mandy Foster x5366 or Darren Brown x5220. They need at least 5 people a week to go. BTW - This can count for community service hours.
** Nursing Home - Tuesdays from 5-7pm. They have been having a great time! Talk to Amanda Van Deman (x5258) Christyn Friel (x5203) or Heather Taylor(x5106) if you want to join them.
** Saturday lunch distribution - Yes. Every Saturday unless otherwise noted. 9am @ Marriott
** Angel Tree Project - Korryn Delmanto is working on this project, buying Christmas presents for kids. Talk to her if you wanna help. (x5283)
** T-shirt Design CONTEST!! - We need a new YACHT shirt design. Give it a shot. The only requirement is that it say YACHT (Youth Against…) somewhere.
** IT IS GETTING COLD!! -- Blankets, winter clothes, socks, hats, gloves. Donations are needed! Whatever you can get, from wherever.

1) Why did you join YACHT? 2) What are you most excited about? 3) What are you most concerned about? 4) What do you see your role as being when you face these issues?

Minutes Monday the 13th

* Opened with Prayer, small groups of people go together for prayer
* Mike welcomed everyone and asked a few questions:
* what does it really mean to be doing what we are doing?
* How will what we are doing effect our lives?
* This was an introduction to the questions and another about Séid.
* Each of the Séid members shared why the were doing Séid. Michelle, Amie, Shane, Brooke, Mike and Jamie.
* Mike summed up all the answers

* Food bank on Saturday from 1-4, See Michelle about more details
* We made $350 at Homecoming
* Our good friend Tom Kurtz id requesting our help. He has been making P&J for the hunger people where he is and he would like us to help him fund it- we will talk more about that later
* The Messiah campus YACHT club is coming along- keep them in your prayers as they do for us.

* Ali Lien visited and shared about the YACHT club that she has started in NC- they have been going for three weeks- keep her in your prayers
Mike -
* If anyone has YACHT picture, give them to him or Michelle
* IF you are going to the conference there will be a meeting in the McInnis Lobby at 3pm on Wednesday.
* Some people shared about the trip to philly on Saturday. - Kwanza said that they took 71 lunches but they needed so much more and Lori also talked about the day.
* The meetings are going to be in KEA from now on.
* The small group leaders meet after the meeting.


Minutes Monday the 6th
· -Denise opened with prayer
· -Kwanza did devotions
· -Mike said that NEXT WEEK’S MEETING WILL BE IN KEA STUDY LOUNGE (code ****)

· -Michelle

· -give her your ID # so that Marriot will give us lunches to take in on Saturday- we may lose Saturday lunch she will get back to us on that
· -we do go to the city every Saturday morning and this is NOT just for service learning peeps
· -if you have your van license you need to get a rules and regs paper to drive Yacht members

· -Small groups update

· -Heather spoke about the nursing home - they go on Tuesdays from 5-7. Meet in the lobby of the New Dorm- if you would like to go, you will need to fill out a very simple application form.
· -Darren spoke about the food bank. They are going some time this week and can take as many people as would like to go, but they need at least 5.
· -Brooke spoke about the research group and said that she has stuff for you to do- interesting stuff.,
· -Brook also said that she is going to a large rally protesting the death penalty on the 18th- if anyone would like to go. It will be totally awesome and there will be music. poetry, Jesse Jackson and much more. She will have more info later.

-SEID update done by Shane

· -The church may be off, but they have other great ideas.
· -Thanked whoever for the "surprise" lunches.
· -new member of the SEID group.. Amie!

· -Mike said that we will be having a conference in feb like the one that we are going to this month. Be thinking and praying about it.

· -PAPA STUFF

· -the money breakdown….$2100 profit..10% to student activities, $447.06 to Habitat for Humanity, $781.84 to SEID, $781.84 to YACHT club.. but that’s not all!!! The Yacht grand total- t-shirt and everything = $1905.37
· -Scott and Mike meet with some guys about the whole thing and they said that they will be having PAPA again next year and are thinking of making a stage- whatever..

· -Mike said we need those good stuff buckets Jen reported that here are none in Gallup, They took the ones from Hainer, Scott and Lori Anderson are going to get them for the New Dorm, Sarah Davison will get them from Doane and Ellie Hoffman will get them from Kea.

· -Homecoming

· -Michelle said that we need people to sign up to work the table and collect monetary donations.
· -Megan and Debbie are making a list of everything that we have and need to sell at Homecoming.
· -Michelle said that she is taking people to the city on Saturday and she will be back between 1-2pm so if you go you can still participate in homecoming events.

· -Amie is working on the vans for the conference- things are going well.
-Mike said there will be a meeting for the people going to the conference to tell them what to bring and what not to bring and all that good stuff.

Minutes Monday the 29th
Josh started with prayer

Mike:

  • A get-to-know-each-other's-names-game YIPPEE!
  • Discussed a letter from a pastor who is trying to "care" for the homeless.
  • Talked about the YACHT club web page
    Look on the "Current" page, it has everything you need to know
    It is the BIG DADDY of info.
    Small Groups:
    Nursing Home- Tuesdays at 5.00PM to 7.00PM, maybe changing to Wednesday. Heather and Amanda reported that it was really cool. The residents need some people to talk with. Half of the group will be expected to go to dinner with the residents while the other half will sit around and hang out and talk. They are expecting to do praise songs and pretty much anything. Ideas are welcome. You need to fill out an application to go if you are interested. Contact Amanda @ *5258 for further details.

    New Jerusalem- Thursdays are a probibility. Josh and Amie are going this Thursday to preview. More info will be available next Monday. Possibly construction or other stuff. Talk to Josh @ *5256.

    Church Outreach- There will be more information next Monday. Talk to Debbie @ *5258.

    Civil Disobedience oops I mean Civil Education Awareness- This is an up and coming small group. What it involves is: research, going to town meetings, protesting, and making statements. This is V-I-T-A-L. It will research what effects people. You will be dealing with everthing from Welfare Reform to Section 8 housing cuts. Also Saturday mornings at a Free Market in Kensington. See Brooke for details.

    Mike:
    Wrote a letter to Dee McCarter asking for the left-over GoodStuff buckets. Michelle read the letter to the YACHT club. Dee made verbal confirmation that YACHT can have them. Everyone needs to round up the extras from their dorms. The supplies will be going to PCH (802 Broad).

    Shane:
    Séid minute. Found the name "Together". They are going to meet with the lawyer on Tuesday the 30th. Pray for the buying of a home (Germantown, or St Ed's Church).

    Stuff that HAS to get done that Mike, Michelle & Brooke Can't do
    PS- this is all the stuff that has to get done, and the people who volunteered to do it. If you don't, hey the whole world will know because it's posted on the internet!! (Ha HA)
