The Deaf

Upon a beach, I sat
And waited for you to emerge
From the ocean’s night blackened waters -
First your hair
Wet and flattened
Like a fresh coat of paint -
Then your eyes
Their deep cool blue
Like the ocean by day.
One by one your features emerged
Like a time elapsed film.
You sang to me in Braille
You told me of your audience
With the Pope.
You held both your hands together
As if to pray.
You opened them
And offered me your mouth.
No words were spoken
But I knew what you meant.
