Atom interview

As you know, The Antisocial is a notch above your common punk rag, and therefore we don’t do clutter our pages with interviews with punk rockers. However, we made an exception for the Philly electronic-punk sensation that is Atom and his Package.

Did you play in any other bands before hooking up with the package? If so, what insturment were you?

I only played in one band that I was proud of... that being a punk band called Fracture. I played guitar and yelped in the background a bit.

?Why did you decide to start making elctronic music?

My band broke up and I started writing songs to make my friends laugh. I had lots of time on my hands... obviously.

What equipment do you use?

a qy20, and a qy700 music sequencer. More packages are to be added soon.

How did the Packettes come to be a part of the group?

Again.... too much time on our hands.

Do you really have Black Metal Friends from Norway?

Nah, but I had some black metal friends from Philadelphia, who don't talk to me any more.

Do you know the guy who runs The Atom and His Package worship Page?

Yes. Although he never updates the page and never returns my emails so I guess he doesn't worship me too much anymore.

Is he one of your Black Metal Friends?

no. He is floridan toy collector friend.

Your work reminds me a lot of the Dead Milkmen. Were they a big influence on you?

I don't know. I mean I like their older stuff. I think they wrote some wonderful pop songs, but I don't actively try and sound like them or anything, but I do understand the comparison.

You've toured in many places, such as throughout Europe, Japan (I think), and even Canada! Did your act go over well there? Any funny foreighn tour stories?

In some places it has gone well. There were places in Europe that surprised me, where kids were singing along with me etc. However, there were plenty of places, like here, where people thought I sucked, and yelled at me. Of course, in Germany, I couldn't understand what they were saying.

Any funny Americain tour stories?

In Greensboro, NC the people who did the show passed out fliers before the show to everyone, except me, instructing, that during my set, to yell "GO!" everytime I used the word "song", and lots of other rules, so everyone was yelling at me at the same time, and I had no idea why. It was pretty godamn funny.

Do your parents really go to your shows?

They did once. They don't like hang out at my shows or anything.

What's your favorite zine,

Sissy zine from Delaware.

band,

hard to narrow it down to one, but I've been listening to a lot of Belle and Sebastian these days.

and book?

The Man who Mistook His Wife for a Hat is pretty terrifying, funny, interesting.

Could you explain your sick obsession with 80s rock?

I'm not really obsessed with it. I just like upbeat catchy stuff, and it's really easy to rip off.

If you decide to become a sellout, what corporate maufactured product would you endorse?

I would endorse Yamaha music sequencers, and Peavey drums.

Can I be just like you when I grow up?

I don't think so. My mom says I'm unique.

When you retire from music, are you going to found a real Punk Rock Academy?

I keep hearing of a few that exist, so hopefully I can get a job at one.

Any closing remarks (or records you want to promote)?

Nah. Thanks very much though. Atom.
