Snow showers are spreading into the region as this update is arriving. Snow showers and flurries will continue throughout the night and into the day on Saturday (although only scattered flurries likely during the day Saturday) with little accumulation expected. Perhaps a light coating in our region with up to an inch possible around Scranton and points North. Lows overnight in the upper 20s.
Skies will clear out Saturday night with lows in the low to mid 20s. Sunday will be mostly sunny with highs around 30. Monday will start off mostly sunny, but clouds will be on the increase as the day progresses in association with a potent storm system in the Great Plains. Highs Monday in the lower 40s.
A powerful storm system in the Plains will arive early Tuesday and bring with it rain, perhaps heavy at times and even a rumble or two of thunder. This is the same storm complex that will likely bring severe weather to parts of the midwest on Monday (Arkansas/S Missouri/Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama/S Tennesse region). The main system will pass to our North and West, thus allowing warm air to advance Northward ahead of the system. Temperatures in our area will reach the upper 40s for highs Tuesday, and some areas may even hit the 50 degree mark. The system will redevelop near Eastern/Northeastern PA late Tuesday and will continue to track Northeastward from there.
The storm will pull out early Wednesday, but our area will remain under mostly cloudy skies as the upper level low associated with the system passes close to the North. The atmosphere will be unstable enough to include the chance for a rain or snow shower during the day on Wednesday. Highs will be in the low 40s early and temperatures will drop throughout the day into the mid and upper 30s.
Thursday will be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 30s. Another storm system will likely develop in the Western Gulf early on Thursday and we will need to keep an eye on this. Guidance is already beginning to hint at full-latitude phasing ocurring late in the week and that may allow the system to track Northeastward somewhere along the East Coast just in time for the first weekend of February. More on these developments in the next few days.
So, snow showers the remainder of the night with a snow shower or two early Saturday and scattered flurries for the remainder of the day Saturday. A light coating is likely for our area, but not a big deal (up to an inch possible Scranton and points North in PA). A nice day Sunday and Monday, although clouds will be on the increase Monday. Rain, perhaps heavy on Tuesday with scattered rain/snow showers possible Wednesday. Things clear out for Thursday and then the focus turns to a possible phase in the jet streams early next weekend. More later. Have a great weekend!
