These studies say that lobsters are not harmed in growth at all in the presence of these particles. This may actually be true. However, what you are not told is that the particles DO affect the mating system. See, the female sends out a pheremone (or sex chemical) through the water as a message to the male when she is ready to mate. Since lobsters are such solitary animals, the message often has to travel a great length. However, oil in the water can often block these messages, which causes less reproductive activity and fewer lobsters as a result. Why do you think they are so costly? Just something to think about...
