Tourists who wish to leave the páramo and visit a sub-tropical area come to the beautiful town of Baños. With a population of about 15,000 and an altitude of 1,800 metres this area is also very popular with Ecuadorians. During our short stay here, we made it a point to visit the Sanctuario de Nuestra Señora de Agua Sancta . The Virgin is credited with many miracles, including stopping an eruption of the Tungurahua volcano (5,016 metres). The drive from Ambato to Baños is about 45 kilometres and is very interesting.
