Cuenca

Cuenca

Cuenca is the capital of the Province of Azuay. With a population of 153,000 inhabitants, this is Ecuador's third largest city and is the economic centre of the southern Sierra. It is situated on the banks of the Tomebamba River. We enjoyed walking in the streets as it allowed us to witness its colonial past.

Cuenca is the original home of the Panama hat.

A daily flower market is held in the small plaza in front of the Church of el Carmen de la Asunción. In 1991 Cuenca had over 25 churches.

For an excellent chicken soup try the el Dorado Hotel.
