North of Quito

Quito

Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World), 15 kilometres north of Quito, can be reached by car in about half an hour. A stone monument is placed precisely at latitude 0º. The exact equatorial line was determined by Charles de la Condamine and his French expedition in 1735.

The Equator line also crosses the road 8 kilometres, south of Cayambe or about 50 kilometres north of Quito. The monument consisting of a huge concrete globe is much less visited that Mitad del Mundo.
