Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World), 15 kilometres north of Quito, can be reached by car in about half an hour. A stone monument is placed precisely at latitude 0º. The exact equatorial line was determined by Charles de la Condamine and his French expedition in 1735. |

The Equator line also crosses the road 8 kilometres, south of Cayambe or about 50 kilometres north of Quito. The monument consisting of a huge concrete globe is much less visited that Mitad del Mundo. |
