Santo Domingo de los Colorados

Santo Domingo de los Colorados

Santo Domingo de los Colorados is named after the Colorado Indians. Their hair is plastered with a red dye of achiote. We had difficulty finding men wearing their traditional hair dress so we had to ask someone to drive us to the outskirts of the city. For a few dollars I was allowed to take a few pictures.

The 130 kilometres from Quito to Santo Domingo are really exciting and extremely scenic. The road drops almost 3,000 metres down the western slopes of the Andes and is truly a tortuous descent. It is recommended going before noon because the view can be obscured by fog.
