Why Should You Home School, Anyway?

Some Notable Home Schooled Lives: George Washington, Patrick Henry, John Quincy Adams, John Marshall, Robert E. Lee, Booker T. Washington, Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Mark Twain, John Singleton Copley, William Carey, Phyllis Wheatly, and Andrew Carnegie.

Homeschooling is not what we do, it's how we live.... We are teaching our children how to live, love, laugh and learn.

I think you'd agree the primary purpose of school is education. Who is better motivated to answer a child's questions, or help her find answers, than the same people who have taught her to walk and talk. Who cares more about the needs of a child than his parents?

We teach our children to walk, to talk, to share. These are major milestones in a child's life. Homeschooling is an extension of that teaching to reading, writing and math. There are many curriculums available to make that teaching as structured or unstructured as needs require.

One-on-one tutoring allows for a more thorough grasp of the concepts being taught. A child is more likely to ask questions of someone she trusts, in an enviornment free from distraction and peer pressure. Studies show that home schooled students score 20-30 points higher than their traditionally schooled peers, and excel in college with the average grade point average exceeding the college average.

What about socialization? There are plenty of activities to become involved in like church youth groups, scouting, 4H, local homeschool groups, ballet, gymnastics, field trips arranged by other homeschoolers, etc. These outings are fun. The children are surrounded by their friends, who are not only their own age, but ranging in ages from infancy to high school. I have found this type of setting to be more natural for them. The older kids encourage and help the younger ones, the younger children look up to and respect the older kids. The knowledge that is gained on these fieldtrips far outweighs text book reading in a classroom setting. Frankly, I believe socialization is an over-inflated concern about homeschooling.

Child Guidence: Home schooling allows for a close bond between family members. There is time to talk about joys and concerns, moral values, spiritual beliefs and standards.

Flexibility and Time: Children come into this world with their own talents and interests. Homeschooling allows them the time to pursue those interests. A child is more apt to learn when he finds the content interesting. He is also more likely to be motivated to learn.

In Summary: Homeschooling is teaching our children to enjoy and make a priority of learning, to respect and pursue their own unique talents and to prioritize spiritual faith and family.
