Changing Fuel Filter

This article deals with replacing the fuel filter on a '95 XJ. I am pretty sure that this covers many of the Cherokees, but don't take my word for it. As always follow the instructions of a instruction book such as a Chilton's manual. That is what I used for this. Please disconnect the Negative cable on the battery before you start anything. This is to ensure no electrical componants cause a spark, which can cause a fire or explosion.

***Warning---If you do not feel comfortable working with the fuel system, please do not attempt to work on it. Take your vehicle to a dealer or approved service station to have the work done. I can not be held responsible for anything that happens, while performing this replacement. This article is just to provide insight into my experiences with this installation. Thanks.
Now on to the replacement..................

The first thing you have to do is to relieve the pressure in the system. The fuel injected system in the Cherokee is pressurized and it is important that the pressure be relieved so the fuel does not spray everywhere. Remove the fuel cap off the gas tank (what you take off when you fill the tank with gas). The second place is in the engine compartment. Locate the fuel rail on the driver's side of the engine, at the top of the block. This is where the fuel injectors are. Now towards the front of the rail there is a little black plastic cap, which is screwed onto the rail. You have to unscrew the cap, which will uncover a release valve. While holding rags infront of the valve, press a screwdriver, or something like it, into the valve. There should be a steady spray of gas and air coming out of the valve, hold the rags there. The spray should decrease after a few seconds, and you should bleed it until no more gas comes out. Congrats the system is now depressurized.
